Houston stuns Duke with late surge to reach first National Championship Game in 41 Years

In a game that will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA Tournament history, No. 1 seed Houston stormed back from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat fellow No. 1 seed Duke 70–67 on Saturday night, booking their spot in Monday’s national title game against Florida.

The Cougars closed the game on a 9-0 run in the final 33 seconds, flipping what looked like certain defeat into a historic victory that marks their first trip to the national championship game since 1984.

This is everything we’ve worked for,” said head coach Kelvin Sampson. “No one ever loses at anything as long as you don’t quit. And these kids didn’t.”

The Comeback That Stunned the Nation

Trailing 67–56 with just over three minutes remaining, Houston looked finished. Duke freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, who led all scorers with 27 points, had just drilled a step-back three that gave the Blue Devils control. But Houston’s resolve never wavered.

What followed was a defensive masterclass and a string of clutch plays. Emanuel Sharp knocked down a critical three-pointer, Mylik Wilson grabbed a momentum-swinging steal, and Joseph Tugler dominated the paint with game-saving blocks and a timely tip-in to bring the Cougars within one.

With 19.6 seconds left, J’Wan Roberts calmly sank two free throws to give Houston its first lead since early in the first half. LJ Cryer, who led the Cougars with 26 points, added two more from the stripe to put the game out of reach.

Duke had one final possession, but their last-ditch effort ended in a desperate heave that missed badly, and Houston’s bench erupted in celebration.

Flagg Era Ends in Heartbreak

The loss likely ends the college career of Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. His stellar freshman season, which earned him National Player of the Year honors, will be remembered both for brilliance and for the painful “what if” of this collapse.

Duke's elite 2024 recruiting class — one of the best in recent memory — fell short of the championship expectations, despite being arguably the most talented squad in the tournament.

Historic Moment for Houston Basketball

For a program that once dazzled the nation with its Phi Slama Jama era — including legends like Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon — this victory stands as arguably the biggest in Houston Cougars basketball history. Olajuwon, present at the Alamodome to cheer his alma mater, witnessed a defensive performance that would have made him proud.

Houston's record now stands at 35–4, and their toughness, depth, and signature defense have propelled them to the brink of their first national title.

Tugler’s four blocks, six total team steals, and Houston’s suffocating late-game pressure held Duke to just three points in the final 8:17. Roberts’ game-winning free throws capped off a masterful effort by a team built not on star power, but on grit and cohesion.

AI Wins, Too?

Adding an unexpected twist, Houston’s win also delivered a million-dollar payday — not to a player, but to a machine. Alan Levy, an AI innovator, had placed a bold bet that his artificial intelligence program could create a more accurate March Madness bracket than a professional gambler. The outcome hinged on the Duke-Houston game. With the Cougars' win, Levy’s algorithm clinched the victory — and a $1 million prize.

Next Stop: The Championship

Houston will now face Florida, who earned their spot in the title game with a 79–73 win over Auburn. While the Gators boast elite scoring and athleticism, few teams can match Houston’s defensive tenacity and poise under pressure.

Sampson, one win away from career victory No. 800, will have the opportunity to cap off a legendary coaching journey with the one accolade missing from his resume — a national title.
