Iga Swiatek beats Maria Sakkari in Indian Wells final as dominance continues

Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player in the world, dominated Maria Sakkari of Greece in a 6-4, 6-0 victory on Sunday to secure her second Indian Wells WTA title. This triumph comes two years after Swiatek defeated Sakkari to clinch her first title at the same tournament.

The rematch of the 2022 championship showdown resulted in an almost identical outcome, with Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam champion, dominating the second set to claim her 19th career title and her second of 2024.

Sakkari, who is ranked ninth in the world, put up a strong fight in the opening set. She managed to erase a break and saved two break points in the final game.

However, Swiatek sealed the set with a powerful forehand winner after 44 minutes of intense play.

The Polish star wasted no time in finishing the match, taking just 24 more minutes to secure victory. She broke Sakkari's serve at love, taking a 2-0 lead, and cruised to the finish line.

Swiatek's performance in this tournament showcased her strong comeback from a disappointing early exit at the Australian Open in January.

Since then, she has claimed the title in Doha and reached the semi-finals in Dubai. Her win at Indian Wells makes her the 10th woman to win the title twice, with no player having achieved a three-time victory yet.

Expressing her joy, Swiatek addressed the Stadium Court crowd, stating, "It's truly incredible to be standing here once again." This victory marks her eighth WTA 1000 level title.

Swiatek's journey to victory included a rematch against Linda Noskova, the Czech teenager who surprised her in the third round of the Australian Open in January.

Sakkari, who has won two career titles, including last September's 1000-level event in Guadalajara, managed to break back in the fifth game and evened the set with a love hold for 4-4.

However, after Swiatek secured the first set, she went on to win the last eight games of the match, dominating the court.

Sakkari acknowledged Swiatek's performance, especially after a challenging semi-final against US Open champion Coco Gauff, setting up the rematch between the two players.

Despite having won three out of six meetings with Swiatek, Sakkari has not defeated her since 2021.
