Iga Swiatek defeats lucky loser Eva Lys to secure Australian Open quarter-final spot

Iga Swiatek, demonstrating her formidable prowess, decisively defeated German lucky loser Eva Lys with a score of 6-0, 6-1 on Monday, advancing to the quarter-finals of the year's first Grand Slam for the second consecutive time.

The five-time Grand Slam champion entered the match having conceded only 10 games throughout the tournament, and she sent a clear message to her competitors by overpowering Lys in just 59 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

"That was fantastic; it was my first night session, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play on Rod Laver Arena," Swiatek remarked.

"I truly enjoyed it, which is the most crucial aspect... At 23, I still have much room for improvement. I do not believe I have reached my peak yet. However, these matches significantly boost my confidence.

"The future is uncertain; perhaps I will continue to improve. I am delighted to have played my game... I feel very comfortable, and things are progressing well."

A series of powerful forehand winners enabled Swiatek, a semi-finalist in 2022, to break Lys for the first time, and she maintained her momentum, concluding the first set in a mere 24 minutes.

World number 128 Lys had experienced a remarkable journey after stepping in for Anna Kalinskaya in the main draw following a defeat in the qualifying rounds, but she faced further challenges against the Polish player.

Lys managed to smile and celebrate when she reached 40-30 after losing the initial three games, and she received enthusiastic applause after finally getting on the scoreboard, thus avoiding a double bagel.

Swiatek secured her fifth break after a lengthy six-deuce game and served confidently to set up a quarter-final clash against either Emma Navarro or Daria Kasatkina.
