Iga Swiatek dismisses rankings focus ahead of showdown with Emma Raducanu

Rankings lose their significance when facing Grand Slam champions like Emma Raducanu, as stated by Iga Swiatek on Thursday, ahead of their upcoming match in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.

Swiatek, currently ranked second in the world, dominated Rebecca Sramkova with a score of 6-0, 6-2 in the second round, and is aiming for her first title at the Australian Open.

Despite having secured five major titles, Swiatek's best result in Melbourne remains her semi-final appearance in 2022, where she was defeated by Danielle Collins. Raducanu, who has faced injury challenges since her victory at the 2021 US Open, demonstrated her resilience by defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5 in her second-round match.

Swiatek remarked to the media, "There is no value in focusing on rankings, particularly when competing against exceptional players who have triumphed in significant tournaments." She acknowledged the capability of such players to perform at a high level.

Having held the world number one position for the majority of 2024, Swiatek experienced a setback after a one-month doping suspension around the WTA Finals in November, which affected her ranking and confidence. She noted that starting the year as the top seed, as she did in both 2023 and 2024, placed considerable pressure on her from the outset of the season. However, her perspective shifted following the ban.

"I came to understand last year that I do not have complete control over my ranking," Swiatek explained. "Therefore, I am now concentrating solely on my performance. If I play well, I am confident I will reclaim the number one spot. Conversely, if I do not perform at my best and Aryna excels, she will take the lead."

In addition to Raducanu, Swiatek may also face fourth seed Jasmine Paolini, sixth seed Elena Rybakina, and eighth seed Emma Navarro in her section of the draw. "My focus is solely on my next match against Raducanu, and I will prepare accordingly," Swiatek stated. "If I do not perform well in the upcoming match, I will not have the chance to compete against other players."

During a press conference, she was questioned by a group of pre-teen reporters, during which she admitted that the occasions when she had cried after losing matches were among her most humiliating experiences on the court.

"Additionally, there was a time at Indian Wells when I walked onto the court with toilet paper attached to my leg, hanging from my skirt," she recounted with a smile. "That was quite embarrassing as well."
