Iga Swiatek powers into Australian Open semi-finals with dominant display

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek stormed into her second Australian Open semi-final with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over eighth seed Emma Navarro on Wednesday. Swiatek’s relentless performance on Rod Laver Arena underscored her title ambitions at Melbourne Park.

The match wasn’t without drama, as a contentious moment arose during the second set. In the fifth game, Swiatek retrieved a drop shot that appeared to bounce twice before her racket scooped it up. Despite replays suggesting the double-bounce, the point stood, dealing a critical blow to Navarro.

Navarro fought valiantly, particularly in the second set, but Swiatek’s aggressive play proved too much. After squandering her first match point with a netted return, Swiatek sealed the victory when Navarro’s desperate forehand landed wide.

Reflecting on her performance, Swiatek said, "I think it was much more tougher than the score shows.”

Swiatek now faces American Madison Keys, who defeated Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the earlier quarter-final. Though Swiatek holds a 4-1 record against Keys, she remains wary of her opponent’s capabilities.

"Madison is a great player and really experienced, so you never know. The match that I lost, she kind of killed me, so I think it can be tricky," Swiatek admitted.

Madison Keys secured her third Australian Open semi-final with a gritty comeback win over Svitolina. Keys, known for her aggressive style, has now notched 10 consecutive wins.

"To be here 10 years later in the semi-finals again, I'm really proud of myself and really excited to play another semi-final here in Melbourne," Keys said post-match.

After dropping the first set, Keys raised her intensity, dominating with powerful forehands and smart net play. She clinched victory on her first match point when Svitolina’s backhand sailed beyond the baseline.

As Swiatek and Keys prepare to meet, fans are eager to see how the Polish star’s precision and court coverage will fare against the American’s power-hitting game. Swiatek’s dominant form—having conceded just 14 games in five matches—positions her as a strong contender for the title.

While Swiatek and Keys gear up for their showdown, the other women’s semi-final will feature two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka against Paula Badosa, ensuring an electrifying conclusion to the tournament.
