Iga Swiatek sets up quarter-final tie at Indian Wells with Caroline Wozniacki

Iga Swiatek, the tournament's top seed, cruised past Yulia Putintseva with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Tuesday, securing her spot in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells where she is set to take on former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Swiatek struggled at the beginning and managed to save four break points in the third game before hitting her stride. She quickly took a 5-1 lead, causing Putintseva to throw her racket in frustration before closing out the first set in under 30 minutes.

The 2022 champion, Swiatek, started strong in the second set. Despite Putintseva becoming more aggressive with her shots, the world number one proved to be too much for her opponent from Kazakhstan.

Swiatek commented, "I had to maintain my focus in the second set as she was trying different tactics. I wanted to stick to my game plan and focus on my strategies. I'm pleased that I was able to do that."

Earlier in the day, Wozniacki, who made a comeback to the tour last year after taking a break in 2020 to start a family, defeated Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-2.

Swiatek praised Wozniacki, saying, "She's a very experienced player. I think she's performing exceptionally well after her time off for maternity leave. She fought hard to return. I have a lot of respect for her, and I'm looking forward to our match."

Wozniacki expressed her excitement about continuing her journey at Indian Wells after reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in four years. She said, "I'm enjoying every moment and I'm thrilled to have another match in front of all the fans."

Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk emerged victorious against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Kostyuk displayed an impressive performance, dropping only four points on her serve throughout the match.

She also managed to break Pavlyuchenkova's serve five times, securing her spot in the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event. This marks Kostyuk's first time reaching this stage in such a prestigious tournament.

In their previous encounter in San Diego, Kostyuk had narrowly defeated Pavlyuchenkova in a three-set match. However, this time around, Kostyuk found the battle to be less challenging.

The 21-year-old player expressed her satisfaction with the improved conditions, including higher ball bounces and warmer weather, which suited her game better. As a result, she did not feel as much pressure as she did in their previous meeting.

On the other hand, Anastasia Potapova, another Russian player, secured her place in the quarter-finals by defeating Jasmine Paolini. This victory also marked Potapova's first time advancing to this stage in a Masters event.

Notably, her win ended Paolini's impressive eight-match winning streak, which she had achieved by winning the Dubai championship.
