IIHF World Championship roundup: Swiss edge Austria as Sweden and Canada notch wins

By the conclusion of the third day of the IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic, each team had competed twice. Noteworthy performances on Sunday were delivered by the dominant teams of Canada, Finland, and Sweden, all of whom secured significant victories.

Group A
Austria 5 Switzerland 6
In a thrilling late game in Prague, Switzerland emerged victorious over Austria with a score of 6-5, placing them in second position in Group A with six points from two matches. This is the same number of points as the group leaders, Canada. The outcome of the match was determined by a power-play goal from forward Nico Hischier in the final minute of the third period.

Hischier contributed a total of four points, as did the captain Roman Josi, who scored two goals and assisted on two others.

Austria took an unexpected early lead when Clemens Unterweger found the back of the net with a shot to the right post, beating Reto Berra. Paul Huber then doubled their advantage in the 15th minute with a goal from behind the net. However, the Swiss responded just 75 seconds later with a goal by Josi during a five-on-three power play, narrowing the deficit.

Lukas Haudum restored Austria's two-goal lead early in the second period with a shot from the right circle that found the top corner of Berra's net. Hischier quickly reduced the deficit just 38 seconds later, and Josi tied the game on another five-on-three power play midway through the second period. Ken Jager swiftly turned the game around 13 seconds later. However, in the 35th minute, Haudum scored his second goal of the game on a power play, leveling the score.

At the start of the third period, Akira Schmid replaced Berra in the Swiss goal, and just 43 seconds later, Hischier once again gave Switzerland the lead with a shot from between the circles. However, in the 53rd minute, Benjamin Baumgartner equalized for Austria. It was in the late stages of the game, during a Bernd Wolf exclusion, that Hischier secured the victory by maneuvering around the net and sliding the puck past David Kickert at the left post.

Denmark 1 Canada 5
Canada comfortably defeated Denmark 5-1 in Prague, maintaining their unbeaten record in Group A after two matches. Star player Connor Bedard, who had already scored two goals in the team's 4-

Finland dominated Great Britain with an impressive 8-0 victory in the early Group A match held in Prague on Sunday. This win came after Finland's narrow 1-0 shootout loss to the Czech Republic. On the other hand, Great Britain, who returned to the tournament after a one-year hiatus, is still searching for their first point.

Oliver Kapanen showcased his skills by scoring a remarkable hat trick in front of a packed crowd, while Mikael Granlund, another forward for Finland, contributed with four assists. Goalkeeper Emil Larmi ensured a clean sheet for Finland.

Moving on to Group B, Sweden secured a convincing 5-1 win against Poland in Ostrava. With this victory, Sweden now holds a perfect six points after two games and currently leads Group B. Defenceman Erik Karlsson played a crucial role in the win, scoring two goals and providing an assist.

Sweden took an early lead in the 4th minute when Maciej Kruczek accidentally knocked Marcus Johansson's pass into his own net. Capitalizing on their superiority, Sweden quickly doubled their lead.

Although Poland had opportunities to narrow the deficit at the start of the second period, they failed to convert. In the 33rd minute, Karlsson, the defender, added a third goal for Sweden. Poland managed to reduce the deficit in the 43rd minute through Alan Lyszczarczyk's goal, but they couldn't make the game more competitive. Sweden added two more goals to secure a comfortable victory.

In another Group B match, Latvia emerged victorious with a 3-2 overtime win against France. This win, similar to their previous match against Poland, earned Latvia two points in Group B.

The game was ultimately decided by captain Kaspars Daugavins, who scored in the 65th minute of overtime. France earned their first point of the tournament after suffering an opening defeat to Kazakhstan.

Slovakia emerged victorious against Kazakhstan with a score of 6-2 during the World Championship in Ostrava, securing their initial points in the second game of the tournament. Despite their previous victory against France, the Kazakh team was unable to maintain their momentum.
