Ime Udoka secures six-year contract extension with the Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka has reportedly signed a six-year contract extension, signaling the franchise’s long-term commitment to the man who has helped turn the team into a genuine title contender.

While the full details haven’t been officially disclosed, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the deal is worth at least $10 million per year, placing Udoka among the highest-paid coaches in the NBA.

Speaking during media day ahead of the 2025–26 season, Udoka hinted at the length of the new deal when he said:

“Me and Rafael [Stone] have been on the same page from day one about our goals and expectations. To be extended and be together for the next six years or whatever… it’s an honor. They’ve entrusted me in this role, and we’ve done some good things.”

If confirmed, Udoka’s new contract would take him through the 2030–31 NBA season, exceeding the standard three-to-five-year length most coaches receive.

When Udoka joined Houston in April 2023 on a four-year, $7 million-a-year deal, the Rockets were coming off three dismal seasons with 22 or fewer wins. In just two years, he has overseen a dramatic turnaround — from 41-41 in his first season to 52-30 and a No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last year.

Under his leadership, the Rockets have transformed from a struggling young team into a defensive powerhouse and playoff threat, earning praise across the league. The offseason addition of Kevin Durant, who cited Udoka as a key reason for joining Houston, has only strengthened the belief that the Rockets are building something special.

Udoka’s long-term extension, reportedly backed by owner Tilman Fertitta, reflects the organization’s confidence that he can sustain this rise, and possibly deliver Houston’s first championship since 1995. “We take it year by year,” Udoka said, “but it’s an honor to have that trust. We want to keep pushing toward our ultimate goal.”
