India beat England by five wickets in fourth Test to clinch series

India emerged victorious in the fourth Test against England at Ranchi on Monday, securing a remarkable five-wicket win and ultimately triumphing in the five-match series with a score of 3-1.

Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel displayed composure to guide India to a five-wicket triumph over England in the fourth Test match on Monday. Closing in on a 192-run target, India found themselves at 120-5 before Gill (52) and Jurel (39) combined for an unbeaten partnership of 72 to secure victory in the day's second session in Ranchi.

India's series-clinching win against England sealed a definitive 3-1 lead in the five-match series, bouncing back after losing the initial Test. This result marks the first series defeat for captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum since they assumed their roles in 2022 and brought about a shift in England's fortunes with their aggressive "Bazball" approach.

Gill anchored the innings with a 124-ball half-century as he and Jurel, who had scored 90 in India's first innings, weathered a storm when Shoaib Bashir claimed two quick wickets soon after lunch.

Despite requiring 72 runs, Gill and Jurel smartly worked the singles before Gill reached his fifty with back-to-back sixes off Bashir. Jurel then hit the winning runs, setting off celebrations in the Indian camp.

India's solid start in the morning was led by captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, expanding their 40-run overnight partnership to 84. Although Root made a breakthrough early on by dismissing Jaiswal (37), Rohit continued to his fifty but was eventually stumped by Ben Foakes off Tom Hartley's bowling.

The atmosphere escalated when Bashir, who took his first five-wicket haul in the opening innings, sent Rajat Patidar packing for a duck. After lunch, Bashir further dampened the spirits of the Indian supporters by claiming two more wickets.

While Jadeja fell to a catch by Jonny Bairstow, Sarfaraz Khan was snagged by Ollie Pope after a slight tickle, leaving Jurel to resist the hat-trick ball and lead India to victory.

England posted a total of 353 runs in their first innings, taking a lead of 46 runs over India's 307.

On the third day, Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav were instrumental in securing the victory by taking nine wickets in England's second innings, restricting them to 145 runs.

Despite being 112-5, England managed to recover in their first innings, thanks to Root's unbeaten 122.

India's bowling attack, missing Jasprit Bumrah who was rested, performed well, with debutant Akash Deep taking three early wickets after England chose to bat.

Anderson achieved 698 Test wickets in the match, requiring just two more to join the elite club of bowlers with 700 wickets, alongside Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

The fifth and final Test match is scheduled to commence on March 7th in the picturesque Himalayan town of Dharamsala.
