India Chase First-ever Test Series Victory in South Africa

South Africa has been successful in seven out of eight visits by India since 1992, with one series ending in a draw in 2010/11. However, six of those victories were achieved by a narrow margin.

The current South African team lacks the experience and skill with both bat and ball compared to previous years, especially in their top six batsmen who can be vulnerable.

In addition, they are facing fitness tests for key fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, who could pose a challenge on the lively Centurion Park pitch in the first Test. The tour will then move to Newlands in Cape Town for the second fixture starting on January 3rd.

South Africa coach Shukri Conrad emphasized the significance of India never having won a Test match in South Africa. He expressed the team's desire to maintain their proud record.

This series will be determined by several key matchups, and with only two Tests, the pressure will be high. Falling behind 1-0 would make it impossible to win the series, while being 1-0 ahead would make it difficult to lose. It will be a contest akin to a heavyweight boxing bout.

India, despite having some injured players, remains a formidable side with recent series victories in Australia, which has boosted their confidence in conquering this particular challenge.

Leading seamer Mohammed Shami and batter Ruturaj Gaikwad are unavailable due to injuries. However, Virat Kohli, who had to fly home for personal reasons, is expected to return for the first Test.

Interestingly, South Africa has not drawn a Test match at home since a rain-affected game against New Zealand in 2016. They have recorded 24 wins and eight defeats in their last 32 matches, showcasing their positive and challenging brand of cricket.

India coach Rahul Dravid acknowledged the difficulty of batting in South Africa, citing the challenging conditions and the variety of swing, seam, and spin that the pitches offer over the course of five days.

Each batter will devise a strategic approach for their game, and as long as they possess a clear understanding of it, commit to it, and diligently practice towards it, it is deemed acceptable.

"We do not anticipate uniformity in everyone's playing style. Our aim is for each individual to have a thorough comprehension of what works best for them and subsequently demonstrate proficiency in executing it."
