India uncertain about Mohammed Shami's return date due to knee injury concerns

Indian pace bowler Mohammed Shami is experiencing a knee issue while working on his fitness following heel surgery, and the team is uncertain about his availability for the upcoming tour of Australia, as stated by captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday.

Shami has not participated in any matches for the national team since the 50-over World Cup final against Australia last year and was nearing full fitness before being excluded from the three-test series against New Zealand that commences on Wednesday.

"At this moment, it is quite challenging for us to make a decision regarding his fitness for this series or the Australia series," Rohit informed the media.

"He recently encountered a setback with unusual swelling in his knee... We remain hopeful.

"Our priority is to ensure he is completely fit. We do not wish to send an unprepared Shami to Australia, as that would not be a prudent choice for us."

India is set to travel to Australia for a five-test series starting on November 22nd, and Rohit expressed optimism about Shami's involvement.

"The physiotherapists, trainers, and medical staff have devised a plan for Shami. He is expected to participate in a couple of matches before returning to international play," Rohit explained.

"We will assess his condition after the New Zealand series and determine at what point during the Australia tour he will be ready for us."

Rohit also expressed eagerness for the challenge posed by New Zealand following a 2-0 victory in the series against Bangladesh.

A further series win would mark India's 19th consecutive victory since their 2-1 loss to England in 2012.

"Every team presents unique challenges. We have faced New Zealand numerous times and are familiar with their players, strengths, and weaknesses," Rohit noted.

"However, I have emphasized repeatedly that our focus should be on improving our performance in this series compared to the last one.

"We will aim to concentrate less on the opposition and more on our own game."
