Indian Wells Open: Bencic upsets Gauff to reach Quarterfinals

Swiss wildcard Belinda Bencic pulled off a stunning comeback victory over third-seeded Coco Gauff on Wednesday, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to book her place in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.

The former Olympic champion, who returned to the tour less than a year after giving birth to her daughter Bella, displayed resilience and precision, converting 69% of her first-serve points and breaking the US Open champion three times in a match that lasted two hours and twenty minutes

Bencic's Grit Seals the Upset

In a tense third set, Bencic made the decisive move by overcoming a 0-40 deficit to break Gauff and take a 5-4 lead. She capitalized on her first match point when the top-ranked American misfired a forehand long, sealing the upset.

"This is why you practice and work hard all your life, to play in this kind of atmosphere," Bencic said after the match. "I had chills and goosebumps when you cheered before the match. I was so nervous I just tried to put the serve in the court."

Gauff’s Strong Start Unraveled by Bencic’s Fightback

Gauff began the match with an aggressive approach but struggled with her serve, committing five double faults in the opening set. Despite the serving woes, she managed to claim the set in 51 minutes when Bencic sent a forehand wide.

However, Bencic rebounded in the second set, overcoming foot and hand discomfort that required medical attention twice. She raced to a 4-1 lead and ultimately secured the set as Gauff sent a return into the net. Before the deciding set, Bencic took another medical timeout for a blister on her hand but showed no signs of slowing down in her impressive finish.

What’s Next for Bencic?

Bencic now awaits the winner of the match between fifth seed Madison Keys—the reigning Australian Open champion—and 19th seed Donna Vekic of Croatia.

Indian Wells Quarterfinal Showdowns Loom

The tournament is heating up as top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka is set to face Britain’s Sonay Kartal, with the winner advancing to meet either Jasmine Paolini or Liudmila Samsonova.

On the men’s side, 11th seed Ben Shelton secured a dominant 7-6(6), 6-1 win over Brandon Nakashima, setting up a quarterfinal clash against either third seed Taylor Fritz or Britain’s Jack Draper.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz will take on Grigor Dimitrov in the evening session, with a potential quarterfinal matchup against either Francisco Cerundolo or Alex de Minaur on the line.
