Inter and AC Milan reject plan to renovate San Siro

On Friday, Inter and AC Milan declined the proposal to modernize and renovate the renowned San Siro stadium, which they jointly utilize, as announced by city mayor Giuseppe Sala.

"The two clubs have rejected the restructuring plan for San Siro put forth by the construction firm WeBuild," Sala stated following discussions with representatives from the two northern Italian teams.

"They presented comprehensive assessments regarding the technical and economic viability of the project, concluding that it cannot be executed at a sustainable cost and that they prefer not to pursue this avenue."

However, the clubs are open to revisiting the original concept of constructing a new stadium in close proximity to San Siro, according to Sala.

"We are not beginning anew on this matter, but there is opposition from local residents," Sala emphasized.

"They need to submit a proposal within a relatively short timeframe, but the process of building stadiums in Italy is inherently challenging and complex."

In an effort to enhance their commercial revenue, both clubs, which have collectively won the European championship ten times, have expressed their desire to vacate the San Siro, owned by the city of Milan.

Officially named the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, the 80,000-seat San Siro, an impressive concrete edifice constructed in 1926, no longer fulfills their requirements.

Additionally, each club has its own stadium project in development.

Earlier this year, AC Milan acquired land in the San Donato Milanese suburb, located to the southeast of the city, as part of a strategy to relocate from the San Siro and beyond the official limits of Milan.

Meanwhile, the reigning Serie A champions, Inter, are exploring options in the towns of Rozzano and Assago, situated just south of Milan. They have also considered the potential for development on former industrial sites in the densely populated northern suburb of Sesto San Giovanni.

In 2026, the San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

Additionally, it is expected to be the venue for the 2027 Champions League final, although reports from the Italian media suggest that this may be jeopardized due to the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the stadium's future.
