Inter Miami coach Mascherano says MLS salary rules make it impossible to sign Neymar

Inter Miami's head coach, Javier Mascherano, anticipates the addition of several new players to assist Lionel Messi in the upcoming Major League Soccer season. However, he deems it "impossible to consider" the possibility of Brazilian Neymar (32) joining the team.

Recent speculation has emerged regarding Neymar's potential transfer to Miami, aiming to recreate the former 'MSN' attacking trio from Barcelona, which included Messi and Luis Suarez.

Currently contracted to Saudi club Al-Hilal, Neymar commented on the rumors during an interview.

"Playing alongside Messi and Suarez again would undoubtedly be amazing. They are my friends, and we still keep in touch," Neymar stated, as reported by CNN.

"Reviving this trio would be intriguing. I am content at Al-Hilal and in Saudi Arabia, but one never knows. Football is full of surprises."

However, the salary and roster regulations of MLS indicate that Miami is not in a position to sign Neymar under a 'Designated Player' contract, akin to Messi's arrangement.

Mascherano acknowledged the constraints of the club's current roster situation, asserting that the acquisition of the 32-year-old is not feasible at this time.

"Ney is undoubtedly a remarkable player. Every team globally would desire him. Yet, given the current MLS salary regulations, it is impossible for us to consider him at this moment," remarked Mascherano, who was a teammate of the trio at Barcelona.

Mascherano made these comments during an MLS media event in Miami, where Suarez was also queried about the potential signing of his former teammate.

"Everyone is aware of Neymar's capabilities as a player and the chemistry we shared. We are now in a different phase of our lives, much older than we once were, but the prospect of having a player of his caliber is always exciting," the Uruguayan noted.

"Ultimately, as he mentioned and as many will agree, anything can happen in football. However, while there are hopes and expectations, realizing them is quite challenging and complicated."

Miami will need to release several players to accommodate Neymar's high-paying contract; however, Mascherano has more modest aspirations.

Following a surprising elimination by Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs, despite a strong regular season performance, Miami has transferred multiple defenders since Mascherano succeeded fellow Argentine Gerardo Martino in late November.

When inquired about potential reinforcements for the defense, Mascherano responded, "We are actively pursuing that matter."

He elaborated, "We have experienced several departures due to the conclusion of loan agreements, some sales, and players we could not renew. We are currently working to finalize some new additions."

"I am optimistic and nearly certain that in the coming days, we will secure some of the reinforcements we have requested, allowing us to begin shaping the squad in preparation for the pre-season."
