Inter Milan 1-0 Juventus: Inter grab crucial win against title rivals

Inter Milan extended their lead over Juventus to four points in Serie A, thanks to a Federico Gatti own goal that resulted in the Old Lady's second defeat in the last seven Derby d'Italia league encounters.

The atmosphere at the San Siro was electric as the top two teams faced off, creating a daunting environment for the Juventus players. However, they were not intimidated. Despite Inter's dominance in possession early on, the Nerazzurri struggled to find success in the attacking third.

The visitors had a scare in the first half-hour when Hakan Calhanoglu played a brilliant defense-splitting pass to Federico Dimarco, who then squared the ball to Marcus Thuram. But Gleison Bremer made a crucial challenge to deny Thuram an easy tap-in.

For most of the opening period, Massimiliano Allegri's men were stuck in their own half. However, on a rare forward move, Weston McKennie created an opportunity for Dusan Vlahovic, who unfortunately wasted it due to a poor first touch.

Just before halftime, Benjamin Pavard's failed attempt at a bicycle kick from Nicolo Barella's cross caused chaos in the six-yard box. In the confusion, Gatti unintentionally chested the ball into his own net as Thuram closed in.

With a bizarre lead going into halftime, Inter aimed to extend their advantage as the game opened up. Dimarco had a shot from the edge of the area that went wide, and Calhanoglu's volley hit the outside of the post.

To their credit, Juventus posed a greater threat in the second half. Gatti came close to redeeming himself with a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target.

As the game reached its final quarter, Juventus relied on Wojciech Szczesny to keep them in the contest. He made a phenomenal save to deny Barella's blistering volley and then stopped Marko Arnautovic from close range.

Despite the drying up of opportunities at the opposite end, Inter managed to maintain their impressive record of not conceding a goal beyond the 76th minute in Serie A this season.

With their sixth consecutive home league victory, and the fifth clean sheet within that streak, Simone Inzaghi's team has firmly positioned themselves as frontrunners for the Scudetto.

On the other hand, Juventus experienced a night of contrasting emotions as their 19-match unbeaten run came to an end. With Inter still having a game in hand, Allegri's men will need to be nearly flawless in the remaining matches if they hope to reclaim their former dominance in Italian football.
