Inter Milan 1-1 Napoli: Partenopei stay top as title challengers share spoils in thrilling encounter

Napoli maintained their position at the top of Serie A following a 1-1 draw against defending champions Inter Milan at the San Siro, thereby extending their unbeaten streak at this historic venue to five matches.

Entering this encounter with a remarkable nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions—eight of which were victories—and a notable 1-0 win over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, Inter was aware that a victory would elevate them to the top of Serie A prior to the international break.

The first half featured limited clear opportunities, yet it was the visitors, who are also the league leaders, that managed to score first.

Scott McTominay, who has quickly become a fan favorite since his transfer from Manchester United to Naples, emerged as the hero once more, scoring from close range after Amir Rrahmani had redirected Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s corner midway through the half.

It was not until five minutes before halftime that the Nerazzurri posed a threat to Napoli's goalkeeper, Alex Meret. Shortly after Meret successfully denied Francesco Acerbi’s shot, he found himself retrieving the ball from the net.

Hakan Calhanoglu, who had netted the sole goal against Arsenal, struck again in this match, delivering a powerful shot into the top corner from outside the box. Although Meret managed to get a hand on the ball, the combination of its swerve and the force behind Calhanoglu’s strike rendered it impossible for him to keep it out.

Following the break, both teams displayed a strong desire to secure a win. Inter's left-back Federico Dimarco had the first chance of the second half, hitting the post with a low shot within ten minutes of the restart, and he tested Meret again midway through the second half. Inter then had a significant opportunity to take the lead when Denzel Dumfries was fouled by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa in the penalty area.

Calhanoglu's proficiency in converting penalties had become a reliable aspect of his game since his transfer to Italy, having successfully netted all of his previous 19 attempts. However, this impressive streak was abruptly halted when he hit the post, leaving the Inter supporters in disbelief.

Nicolo Barella then stepped up to take a shot, but once again, Meret was able to thwart his effort. Although it appeared that the home team was poised to secure a victory, they ultimately failed to capitalize on their dominance.

As a result, Inter remains one point behind the Partenopei, and considering the current competitiveness of Serie A—where only two points separate the teams from first to sixth place—Calhanoglu's missed penalty could have significant implications.

Antonio Conte and his squad will, however, take solace in managing to secure a draw, despite now being without a victory in their last two matches.
