Inter Milan 2-0 Atalanta: Dumfries scores twice to propel Nerazzurri past La Dea and secure Supercoppa Italiana Final spot

A remarkable second-half performance by Denzel Dumfries, who scored twice, propelled Inter Milan to a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final.

This triumph positions the Nerazzurri to potentially become the first team to secure the trophy for four consecutive years in the upcoming final on Monday.

Despite the absence of the usual fervor found in the San Siro, Inter's players demonstrated resilience and immediately took the offensive. In fact, Lautaro Martinez squandered a golden opportunity within the first minute, setting a precedent for his numerous attempts on goal throughout the first half.

Marco Carnesecchi exhibited exceptional skill, making a series of impressive saves, including a close-range denial of Martinez following a free-kick from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and subsequently executing a double save to keep the score level.

While Atalanta may not have enjoyed significant support in Saudi Arabia, they remain a formidable opponent, currently leading Serie A after an impressive streak of 11 consecutive league victories.

Their most promising opportunity came when Alessandro Bastoni inadvertently directed a header towards Giorgio Scalvini, who, despite being unmarked just a few yards from goal, failed to convert against Yann Sommer. Following this, Atalanta appeared to gain momentum and largely contained Inter's attacks, aside from a few more missed chances from the profligate Martínez.

Inter needed a different player to make an impact in front of goal, and they did not have to wait long after the break. Just minutes into the second half, Yann Bisseck set up Dumfries with a header in the box, leading to a spectacular overhead kick that found the bottom corner of Carnesecchi's net.

In an effort to respond, Gian Piero Gasperini brought on Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere, but Dumfries continued to dominate, scoring again shortly after the hour mark.

A misplayed touch by Medhi Taremi at the edge of the area unexpectedly opened up space for Dumfries, who unleashed a powerful shot into the net.

Martinez subsequently failed to surpass Carnesecchi, leaving the outcome uncertain, and Atalanta were unfortunate not to reduce the deficit when Ederson’s goal was disallowed for offside.

Ultimately, there was no consolation for the Supercoppa newcomers, allowing Inter to secure a fifth consecutive victory without conceding a goal.

Although this marks only Atalanta’s second loss in 20 matches, La Dea remains winless in their last 14 encounters against Inter, with Simone Inzaghi’s team triumphing in each of the previous seven.

The eight-time Supercoppa champions are set to face either AC Milan or Juventus in the final, as they aim to match the latter’s record of nine titles.
