Inter's Martinez delighted with Scudetto win, keen to sign new contract

Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan's striker, said he was close to tears after his team became the first to win the Serie A title in the Milan derby, defeating AC Milan 2-1 on Monday.

Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram scored in each half to secure Inter's 20th Serie A title and a sixth consecutive win against Milan, who scored a late goal through Fikayo Tomori.

Martinez, the top scorer in Serie A with 23 goals, celebrated his first Scudetto victory as Inter captain having also won the title in 2021.

"I am overwhelmed with emotions because of the hard work and dedication we put in. This joy is well-deserved. I dedicate this victory to my family in Argentina, my children, my teammates, and all the fans," the 26-year-old expressed to DAZN.

"I emphasized to the team the unique situation we were in, and we seized the opportunity to triumph in a Rossoneri stadium."

The Argentina international expressed his desire to continue with Inter, despite ongoing negotiations for a contract extension beyond his current deal, which ends in June 2026.

"I am hopeful for a renewal. We are working towards an agreement with the club," Martinez stated.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirmed discussions for a new five-year contract with the forward, expressing confidence in reaching an agreement after Martinez's significant contributions to the team.
