Ipswich Town 0-1 Crystal Palace: Mateta's second-half strike earns Eagles narrow win

Crystal Palace secured their inaugural away victory in the Premier League (PL) this season by overcoming Ipswich Town at Portman Road, marking their first league encounter since 2013.

Both teams entered the match with equal points and identical records (W1, D6, L6), with each having achieved their sole PL win against Tottenham Hotspur.

With only goal difference distinguishing the two sides, the evenly contested first half was perhaps anticipated, as Ipswich successfully thwarted Palace's attempts for the majority of the period.

It was not until the closing moments of the first half that the Eagles began to pose a threat, with Eberechi Eze's efforts to evade Wes Burns culminating in a deflected shot that was comfortably gathered by Arijanet Muric.

On the other side, the Tractor Boys struggled to create significant opportunities, although a header from Harrison Clarke following a corner by Leif Davis nearly broke the stalemate just before halftime.

This marked the 11th scoreless first half in 14 PL matches for Palace, a league-high, as they have often relied on late goals in recent outings.

Ipswich commenced the second half with vigor, as Liam Delap directed a header from Burns’ cross towards Dean Henderson, but the match soon reverted to a subdued state with minimal noteworthy action.

However, after an hour of play, the visitors struck first when Jean-Philippe Mateta received the ball from Eze, maneuvered past Jacob Greaves, and skillfully lifted a shot over Muric.

This goal seemed to invigorate Palace, who appeared more likely to secure a second goal against an Ipswich team that has yet to achieve a clean sheet at Portman Road this season.

Despite a late header from Greaves that struck the far post, the hosts ultimately fell short, unable to increase their tally of five home league goals, resulting in their seventh PL defeat.

Ipswich now finds itself in 19th place, two points away from safety, having played one additional match and yet to secure a home victory in the Premier League this season.

In contrast, Oliver Glasner's team has ascended to 16th in the Premier League rankings, establishing a three-point cushion above the relegation zone.
