Ipswich Town 0-6 Manchester City: Foden shines as Cityzens dominate hosts in rout

Phil Foden delivered a standout performance, scoring twice and assisting another, as Manchester City stormed back into the Premier League’s top four with a commanding 6-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday.

The emphatic win moved City to 38 points, overtaking Newcastle United on goal difference. However, they remain 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and trail Arsenal and Nottingham Forest by six points each. Ipswich, meanwhile, remain 18th with 16 points as their struggles continue.

Despite a few promising chances for Ipswich early on, City shook off their recent struggles with an electrifying display of attacking football. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne combined to set up Foden, who drilled the ball home to give City the lead.

City’s relentless pressure doubled their advantage just three minutes later. Doku, instrumental on the left flank, fed the ball to Foden, who teed it up for Mateo Kovacic to fire into the net from the edge of the box. Foden continued to torment Ipswich’s defense and added his second goal in the 42nd minute, as his shot slipped under goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The visitors showed no signs of slowing down after halftime. Doku found the net just four minutes into the second half before assisting Erling Haaland, who recently signed a lucrative 10-year contract, for City’s fifth goal. Substitute James McAtee capped off the scoring in the 69th minute with a looping header, sealing a dominant performance for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Foden praised his team’s all-around display:
"Probably the best this season, in terms of all-round play. Keeping possession at important times and we defended well. One of our best performances this year."

Foden attributed the team’s resurgence to improved fitness and chemistry:
"We are building momentum. Keeping players fit is important. I put it down to people being in better shape and the team bonding better."

While City seem to be rediscovering their form, Foden remained cautious about chasing league leaders Liverpool:
"You never know what can happen. The aim is to stay in the top four," he said.

With this result, Manchester City have sent a clear message that they are back to their best and ready to challenge for a strong finish to the season.
