Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth: Late show sees Cherries comeback to defeat hosts

Ipswich Town experienced a devastating conclusion in the Premier League, as they were thwarted in their pursuit of a first home victory in the top flight in 22 years by an extraordinary comeback from Bournemouth. The Cherries scored twice after the 87th minute, clinching a remarkable 2-1 victory.

The match began with intensity, as Sammie Szmodics received a booking for a harsh challenge on Adam Smith. The Portman Road crowd was energized following a much-needed boost, and Jack Taylor nearly opened the scoring with a header that went just over the bar.

However, Bournemouth's relief was short-lived, as Ipswich seized control just two minutes later. Cameron Burgess set up Conor Chaplin at the edge of the box, allowing Chaplin to strike and instill hope in Ipswich for finally achieving a home win after such a long wait.

Shortly after Ipswich's goal, VAR became a focal point with two crucial decisions. Cameron Burgess believed he had scored from a corner, but a VAR review determined that Liam Delap had illegally obstructed Kepa Arrizabalaga during the play, resulting in the goal being disallowed.

Bournemouth quickly countered, with Justin Kluivert seemingly fouled in the penalty area, prompting another tense VAR check. Nevertheless, referee Michael Salisbury upheld his initial decision.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Bournemouth had several opportunities, though they were less threatening compared to earlier moments in the match. The early stages of the second half mirrored this trend, although Lewis Cook came close with a long-range shot that sailed just over the bar.

With no equalizer in sight, Andoni Iraola made tactical substitutions after the hour mark, introducing Enes Unal and Dango Ouattara to inject fresh energy into the Cherries' attack and capitalize on their increasing momentum. Despite this, Szmodics nearly secured the points for Ipswich with just over 20 minutes remaining in regular time.

He received an accurate pass from Delap deep within the penalty area and found himself in a one-on-one situation with Arrizabalaga. However, he was unable to convert, as the Spanish goalkeeper successfully denied his close-range attempt.

These missed opportunities proved detrimental, as Iraola’s team mounted an impressive comeback to reverse the outcome of the match.

Their persistent efforts bore fruit in the 87th minute when a counterattack down the left flank prompted Ouattara to force Arijanet Muric into a hasty exit from his goal. This allowed Ouattara to deliver a cross into the box, where Unal was positioned to score at the far post.

As if that were not sufficient, Ouattara himself became a goalscorer deep into stoppage time, as a series of precise passes dismantled the Ipswich defense, enabling him to score from close range at the near post.

Ipswich will continue to endure a wait of over twenty years for a home victory in the top flight, as they remain four points away from safety.
