Iran 4-1 Palestine: Iran kickoff their Asian Cup campaign in dominant style

Iran defeated Palestine 4-1 in their Asian Cup Group C opener on Sunday at the Education City Stadium, with Iranian fans and players demonstrating solidarity before the three-time champions delivered a football masterclass.

Iran won with goals from Karim Ansarifard, Shoja Khalilzadeh, Mehdi Ghayedi, and Sardar Azmoun, while Palestine's Tamer Seyam scored a consolation goal.

Huge cheers greeted the Palestine squad before their national anthem was played, as Iranian fans demonstrated solidarity with their Middle Eastern counterparts, with some holding the Iran flag alongside the Palestine colours.

A moment of silence was also observed before the game to commemorate the loss of life in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, which has lasted 100 days and killed nearly 24,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in Hamas-controlled Gaza.

The latest conflict in a seven-decade-long war began with a devastating Hamas attack on Oct. 7, in which Israel claims 1,200 people were killed and 240 were taken hostage.

But once the referee blew the whistle for kickoff, Iran got right to work, opening the scoring in the second minute when Saman Ghoddos passed the ball to Ansarifard, who curled his shot past the keeper and into the far corner.

Iran doubled their lead from a set piece, with Ghoddos providing the assist once more, his floating cross to the far post finding Khalilzadeh, who smartly turned the ball into the net to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute.

Iran were technically and tactically superior to the Palestinians, who struggled to get out of their own half at times, and they conceded a third before halftime when Ghayedi found the bottom corner following a flowing move.

Palestine did not put Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to the test until the last minute of first-half stoppage time, when Seyam scored with a close-range header off a set piece.

But Iran ended any hopes of a comeback after the break, when substitute Azmoun made it 4-1, and VAR intervened late in the game to overturn a straight red card for Palestinian defender Mohammed Saleh, who made a last-man tackle.

Despite a couple of promising attacks by the Palestinians, Iran maintained its lead to go top of the group, while Palestine fell to last place.

Earlier in the first Group C game, the United Arab Emirates defeated Hong Kong 3-1 thanks to penalties from Sultan Alamiri and Yahya Al-Ghassani, with Zayed Sultan also scoring. Chan Siu Kwan was Hong Kong's only goal scorer.
