2026WCQ: Iran qualify for 2026 World Cup

Iran has officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the second Asian team to book their ticket after Japan. The three-time Asian champions secured their place in dramatic fashion, battling to a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran on Tuesday.

Taremi’s Heroics Secure Iran’s Qualification

Needing just a point to confirm their World Cup berth, Iran had to come from behind twice to salvage a crucial draw.

Uzbekistan, aiming for their first-ever World Cup qualification, took the lead in the 16th minute through Khojimat Erkinov. However, Mehdi Taremi equalized for Iran shortly after halftime.

Parity lasted just one minute, as Abbosbek Fayzullaev restored Uzbekistan’s advantage. But Iran refused to give up, and Taremi struck again in the 83rd minute to seal the all-important point, ensuring Iran’s sixth World Cup appearance and fourth in a row.

Uzbekistan on the Verge of History

Despite missing out on an automatic qualification spot this time, Uzbekistan remains in contention for their maiden World Cup appearance. They sit second in Group A with 17 points and could qualify in June with a win against either UAE (third) or Qatar (fourth). A UAE loss to bottom-placed North Korea could even confirm Uzbekistan’s spot earlier.
