Isak’s Late Penalty Rescues Point for Newcastle in Dramatic 1-1 Draw Against Brighton

Newcastle United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium after Alexander Isak’s late penalty salvaged a point against Brighton & Hove Albion in a tense Premier League showdown marked by controversial VAR decisions.

The result extends the Magpies’ winless away streak in the league to eight matches, putting a dent in their pursuit of a top-five finish and potential UEFA Champions League qualification. Despite Arsenal’s recent struggles, Eddie Howe’s side failed to capitalize and now face an uphill task in the race for European football.

Brighton Strike First Through Former Magpie Minteh

The match began cautiously, with both teams hesitant to take risks. Brighton, aiming to finish in the Premier League’s top eight, gradually grew into the game. Newcastle carved out the early chances — Harvey Barnes saw his shot deflected for a corner by Bart Verbruggen, and Joe Willock fired narrowly over after a strong run down the flank.

However, Brighton took the lead just before the half-hour mark through a familiar face. Former Newcastle player Yankuba Minteh punished his old side with a brilliant solo effort, cutting into the box and curling a stunning left-footed finish into the far corner.

Newcastle’s Second-Half Fightback and VAR Frustrations

After the break, Newcastle came out with greater urgency. Controversy erupted when Brighton’s Mats Wieffer, already on a yellow card, committed a rough challenge on Sandro Tonali. Despite strong appeals, referee Craig Pawson opted against a second booking.

VAR drama followed. Anthony Gordon, making an instant impact off the bench, was brought down by Tariq Lamptey, initially resulting in a penalty for Newcastle. However, the decision was overturned upon review, as contact was deemed to have started outside the box.

A second potential penalty was also denied after Joe Willock appeared to be fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke, but once again VAR ruled in Brighton’s favor.

Isak Converts Late Penalty to Secure Draw

Newcastle's persistence finally paid off. In the dying minutes, Yasin Ayari was adjudged to have handled Fabian Schär’s free-kick inside the area after yet another extensive VAR check. This time, the decision stood, and Isak coolly converted from the spot to level the score.

Both sides had late chances to steal all three points — Diego Gomez for Brighton and Callum Wilson for Newcastle — but neither was able to convert, leaving both clubs to share the spoils.

What It Means for the Table

The draw keeps Brighton in contention for a top-eight finish, while Newcastle must now regroup ahead of their next fixtures as they continue to chase a European spot. The Magpies' inability to win on the road could prove costly with just a handful of games remaining.
