Israel 1-0 Belgium: Red Devils' disastrous Nations League campaign ends in shock defeat to relegated hosts

Israel ended their streak of five matches without a victory when Yarden Shua scored a stunning winner in the 86th minute, leading to a 1-0 triumph over Belgium in Budapest.

Belgium entered the match eager to recover from their disappointing 1-0 loss to group leaders Italy on Thursday. They were also aware that securing at least a point would guarantee them third place and a spot in the promotion-relegation playoffs.

The Red Devils controlled the game in the early minutes, with their best opportunity arising after 10 minutes. Leandro Trossard attempted a free-kick just outside the penalty area, but his shot was thwarted by Daniel Peretz, preventing it from reaching the bottom corner.

Nevertheless, Domenico Tedesco’s team nearly faced consequences for their inability to capitalize on their strong start midway through the first half, as Eli Dasa struck the left post from just outside the penalty area.

As the match progressed, Israel began to assert themselves and came close to scoring again just eight minutes before halftime. Dor Peretz made a powerful run through the center of the Belgian defense, shooting towards the bottom-left corner, only to be denied by an exceptional save from Koen Casteels.

The second half began with minimal goal-scoring opportunities, but this changed just under an hour into the match when Belgium had a golden chance to take the lead. The ball fell to Lois Openda in the penalty area, but the striker's attempt went narrowly wide of the right post.

As the second half continued, the Red Devils pressed for the opening goal and came close again when Dodi Lukebakio found Johan Bakayoko at the edge of the area, whose deflected shot required a remarkable reflex save from Daniel Peretz.

In a dramatic turn of events, Israel managed to score late in the final five minutes of regular time, securing all three points.

Yarden Shua scored the goal after seizing a loose ball in the Belgium penalty area, demonstrating composure as he placed the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Despite this victory, Israel could not avoid relegation from Group A2, ultimately finishing at the bottom of the group. Conversely, Belgium narrowly escaped relegation, maintaining their position based on head-to-head results, owing to their 3-1 win against Israel in September.
