Issa Rae Joins San Diego FC Ownership Ahead of MLS Debut

Acclaimed actress, producer, and entrepreneur Issa Rae has officially joined the ownership group of San Diego FC (SDFC) as a club partner, further expanding the franchise’s star-studded leadership ahead of its 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) debut.

Renowned for her groundbreaking work in film and television—including the Emmy-nominated HBO series Insecure—Issa Rae has become a cultural icon and advocate for diversity. Her influence extends beyond entertainment, as she actively fosters community engagement and opportunities for underrepresented voices—values that strongly align with San Diego FC’s mission.

Rae joins a distinguished ownership group that includes:
- Juan Mata – World Cup-winning Spanish footballer
- Jocko Willink – Retired U.S. Navy SEAL

Pave Investments Expands African Representation in MLS
Rae’s entry into MLS ownership was facilitated in partnership with Pave Investments, a private African investment firm known for its strategic involvement in NBA Africa’s investment group. As part of this collaboration:
- Tunde Folawiyo, Chairman of Pave Investments
- Kwamena Afful, Founding Director of Pave Investments
will also join San Diego FC’s ownership group, strengthening the club’s international influence.
San Diego FC’s MLS Debut & Key Fixtures
San Diego FC will kick off its MLS journey on February 23, 2025, against defending MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy at 7:00 PM ET (MLS Season Pass).
The club’s first home game at Snapdragon Stadium is set for March 1, 2025, against St. Louis CITY SC at 10:30 PM ET.
