Italy manager Spalletti upbeat ahead of Nations League clash with Belgium

Italy's head coach, Luciano Spalletti, expressed a strong sense of optimism as his team prepares for the Nations League clash against Belgium in Brussels on Thursday. His confidence is rooted in the recent performances of the squad and their training sessions.

Currently, Italy leads Group A2 with 10 points from four matches, although they previously settled for a 2-2 draw against Belgium at home in October.

Spalletti is convinced that his team is in a better position for the upcoming encounter at the King Baudouin Stadium.

"I observed a high level of confidence among the players regarding their abilities, and we are eager to engage in these two matches, which hold significant potential for our future," Spalletti remarked during a press conference on Wednesday.

"I cannot predict what Belgium will bring to the match, but if we perform as I witnessed this morning and in our earlier games, it will be challenging for any opponent to face this Italy."

He also mentioned that he has largely determined his starting lineup, with only minor uncertainties regarding a couple of positions.

"I have essentially made my decision. Naturally, some uncertainty lingers until the last moment with two closely contested positions," he stated.

"This uncertainty is quite normal, and as time progresses, everything will fall into place."

Nicolo Barella, who has returned to the squad following an injury, has a history of success against Belgium, having scored twice in previous matches.

"I mentioned to my teammates today that they are my 'favorite victims'—however, each match is unique, and while I would be pleased to score or perform well, ultimately, the coach makes the decisions, and I must be prepared," he conveyed to Italian media earlier on Wednesday.

He emphasized the importance of moving past the previous encounter with Belgium, where Italy's Lorenzo Pellegrini received a red card after just 40 minutes.

"This match will be challenging; we must not allow the events of the last game to influence us. Prior to that incident, Italy was in control of the match, but this time they will be on home soil and will aim to demonstrate their strength."
