Ivory Coast into AFCON final as Sebastien Haller fires hosts past D.R. Congo

Sebastien Haller netted a remarkable winning goal, propelling Ivory Coast into the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and eliminating the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Elephants continue their determined journey to become the first triumphant host nation since 2006.

The players from both teams were already drenched in sweat due to the hot and humid conditions in northern Abidjan. Cedric Bakambu managed to score an early goal by poking the ball into an empty net. However, upon closer inspection, the goal was disallowed as the ball had been kicked out of Yahia Fofana's hands during the build-up.

With the support of the home crowd, Ivory Coast started to dominate towards the end of the first half. Wilfried Singo's crosses from the right were a constant threat, and he set up a perfect opportunity for Haller, but the forward missed the target from seven yards out, leaving a disappointed Didier Drogba in the stands.

Just two minutes later, a well-executed play led to Franck Kessie hitting the post with a left-footed shot, leaving the Ivory Coast team wondering if they would regret their missed chances.

Theo Bongonda, who came on as a substitute at halftime, almost punished the hosts with a skillful run into the box and a shot that hit the side-netting. However, Haller eventually gave the orange-shirted supporters what they had been waiting for.

The crowd erupted in cheers as Haller volleyed Gradel's cross into the ground, causing it to bounce over the helpless Lionel Mpasi in goal.

Haller came close on two more occasions before the end of the match. He directed a header towards the near post, but it hit the roof of the net.

He also attempted an audacious lob, which narrowly missed the target. Unfortunately, these missed opportunities marked the end of the Leopards' tournament bid, leaving them disappointed.

As the DRC team heads home, Nigeria now stands as the final obstacle between Ivory Coast and their third AFCON title.

The Ivory Coast team's rookie manager, Emerse Faé, who took charge midway through the competition, is preparing for Sunday's showpiece final with the hopes of achieving a fairytale triumph.
