Jack Doohan Hit with Four Penalty Points After Tough Weekend at Chinese Grand Prix

What Happened to Jack Doohan in Shanghai? Australian Formula 1 rookie Jack Doohan endured a challenging weekend at the Chinese Grand Prix, leaving Shanghai with four penalty points on his super licence. While the Alpine driver has yet to score championship points in his first three races, his aggressive maneuvers on the track have landed him in hot water with race stewards.

Why Did Doohan Receive Penalty Points?

The 22-year-old, son of motorcycle racing legend Mick Doohan, was penalized twice over the race weekend. On Sunday, he received two penalty points and a 10-second time penalty for forcing Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar off the track while battling for position. This came on top of another two penalty points from Saturday’s sprint race, where he collided with Sauber’s Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.

How Do Penalty Points Work in F1?

Formula 1 drivers accumulate penalty points for rule violations, and collecting 12 points within a 12-month period results in an automatic one-race suspension. With four points already on his record, Doohan will need to tread carefully in upcoming races to avoid further disciplinary action.

Doohan’s Reaction to the Penalties In a post-race debrief, Doohan acknowledged the penalties but remained optimistic: "It was unfortunate to receive the penalty that we did, and we will revisit it to ensure it does not happen again."

Alpine’s Struggles Continue

Doohan's weekend wasn't the only setback for Alpine. Pierre Gasly was disqualified from his 11th-place finish after his car was found underweight, dashing the team’s hopes of securing their first points of the season. Initially, Gasly’s finish, combined with the disqualifications of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton for technical infringements, could have moved Alpine up in the standings. Instead, the team remains the only constructor yet to score in 2025.

What’s Next for Jack Doohan and Alpine?

Doohan’s struggles come amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Alpine. The Renault-owned team recently signed Argentine driver Franco Colapinto as a reserve driver on a multi-year contract, raising questions about Alpine’s long-term driver lineup. With pressure mounting, Doohan will need to prove his worth in the coming races to secure his place on the grid.
