Jackline Juma enters history books after joining Kenyan Premier League side FC Talanta

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League is set to witness a historic moment as a female coach will lead a men's team for the first time when the 2024/25 season commences on Saturday, August 24th.

This milestone follows FC Talanta's decision to appoint Jackline Juma, a CAF A licensed coach, as their new head coach after the departure of Ken Kenyatta, who has recently joined Kakamega Homeboyz on a one-year contract.

Established in 1963 under the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) and currently governed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the Kenyan top-tier league has never had a female coach at the helm of any team.

However, after 61 years, Talanta has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding Juma's appointment, stating on their social media platforms: “Jackline (Juma) makes history as the first-ever female coach to take charge of a men’s team in the Kenya Premier League as she is appointed FC Talanta head coach.

She is one of only three female coaches with a CAF A license in Kenya and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club.”

Juma, who speaks softly yet confidently, did not hesitate to articulate her vision upon assuming her role, stating that her primary objective is to ensure that Talanta secures a position among the top five teams in the league.

"First and foremost, I must express my gratitude to God; this is a significant achievement for me and for female coaches everywhere. It represents another opportunity for growth, and I am determined to elevate Talanta to new heights," Juma conveyed to Flashscore.

"We have established new goals for the upcoming season, as we aim to avoid the challenges we faced last year. Our approach will be methodical, focusing on one game at a time and taking incremental steps, but we are committed to our objectives," she added.

When pressed to clarify the specific target, Juma responded, "I am prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. My primary goal is to lead the team into the top five, and I am confident that I can achieve this at Talanta. My focus is on my capabilities and qualifications, rather than my gender."

In the previous season, Talanta found themselves in a precarious position, battling against relegation in the final stages of the league. Ultimately, they managed to retain their status, finishing 15th out of 18 teams, narrowly above Sofapaka, who faced relegation and entered the promotion play-off.

Talanta concluded the season with 37 points, having secured eight victories, drawn 13 matches, and suffered 13 defeats, finishing just one point ahead of Batoto ba Mungu, who ended with 36 points and subsequently faced Naivas FC from the National Super League in the play-offs, winning 2-0 on aggregate to avoid relegation.

When asked if she felt apprehensive about being the sole female coach in a predominantly male league, Juma remarked, "Gender should not serve as an obstacle. I believe that women coaches should rise to the occasion. I am here to represent them and demonstrate that success is attainable. I am grateful to Talanta for their faith in me, despite my being a female coach."

"Therefore, I encourage my fellow female coaches not to hesitate; they should pursue these opportunities. It is essential for them to obtain CAF licenses and acquire the necessary coaching knowledge to compete at the highest levels in the Premier League."

Juma took the opportunity to commend the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) under the leadership of President Nick Mwendwa for their unwavering support and continuous efforts in training coaches across the nation, emphasizing that this initiative has enabled many individuals to pursue careers in coaching.

“I owe my progress to FKF; it is through the courses provided by FKF, beginning with the CAF D courses, advancing to the CAF instructors course, and ultimately achieving the CAF A license. This platform has been invaluable in acquiring the necessary knowledge, allowing coaches to understand their roles beyond mere experience from playing. It is about applying what one has learned. Therefore, I believe FKF is excelling in its mission to educate coaches.”

In a separate conversation with reporters, Mwendwa elaborated on how Juma’s successful ascent to a coaching position in the Premier League is a testament to the effective initiatives being implemented by the federation during his tenure.

“We are dedicated to training the trainers, a challenging and often overlooked task that is essential for achieving success at the highest levels. Juma’s appointment to lead Talanta represents a significant milestone in our federation's objectives,” Mwendwa stated to Flashscore.

“Coaching education is a fundamental component of our football development strategy. Many of the coaches we have trained are making substantial contributions at the grassroots level, driven by their passion for the sport, and we aspire to transform this enthusiasm into professional careers.

“Juma exemplifies this transformation; she has successfully converted her passion into a profession, securing employment and earning a livelihood from her role. Our goal is to train as many coaches as possible, ensuring they can build careers in this field, as enhancing the quality of football necessitates investment in coaching education, which remains our commitment as FKF.”

Mwendwa reaffirmed FKF’s dedication to coaching education, asserting that it is the sole pathway for Kenya to cultivate talented footballers.

Juma's achievements can be attributed to the efforts of FKF. She is currently making history as a female coach leading a men's team in the top tier, a feat that many doubted would be possible.

Ottamax remarked: "Furthermore, the federation has educated thousands of grassroots coaches and school instructors, which has significantly influenced the development of our young athletes, as evidenced by the performances of the Emerging Stars and Junior Starlets in recent international competitions."

FKF Media Officer Ken Okaka elaborated on how Juma's accomplishments stem from the extensive training of coaches within the nation. "To date, over 6,000 coaches have gained from the training provided by the federation.

"However, it is important to note that 6,000 is insufficient. To truly transform football in Kenya, we require five to ten times that number. This is the path we are pursuing and must continue to pursue," he stated.

"There are currently fewer than 100 elite coaches in Kenya (holding CAF B and A level qualifications) - our goal is to reach a point where we have 300, then 500, and ultimately 1,000. The impact of this will be substantial. Presently, nearly every grassroots team at the foundational level is managed by a qualified coach who comprehends the necessary training for players at their respective levels, guided by the FKF curriculum."

Okaka added: "CAF diplomas provide coaches with opportunities both within Kenya and abroad, while also contributing to the elevation of standards at the grassroots level.

"At the pinnacle of the sport, football relies heavily on knowledge, and coaches serve as the conduits for imparting this knowledge to players and teams. Knowledge influences quality, and quality leads to victories. This is the key to a brighter future for Kenyan football.

"The coaching programs also offer players a pathway to remain involved in football after their playing careers. Those who have competed at the highest levels possess valuable insights into the game, and transitioning into coaching will provide them with a fresh perspective on football."

Juma, who has amassed considerable experience with teams such as Acakoro, Gor Mahia Queens, and the U15 girls, will commence her tenure at Talanta with a home match against the reigning champions Gor Mahia at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday, August 25th.

Her subsequent match will be against Sofapaka at the same location on September 14th.
