Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez reportedly nearing deal for fight in May

Jake Paul, aged 28 and recognized as one of the most prominent figures in boxing today, is reportedly preparing to face Canelo Alvarez, 38, who is celebrated as one of the sport's most accomplished athletes, in an upcoming match.

According to a report from ESPN on Thursday evening, the two fighters are nearing an agreement for a cruiserweight bout (with a limit of 200 pounds) scheduled for May 3 in Las Vegas. It is anticipated that the event will be broadcast on Netflix.

Paul holds a professional boxing record of 11 wins and 1 loss, although he has yet to compete against an opponent of Alvarez's caliber. The Cleveland native gained widespread recognition as an internet personality, amassing a significant following on social media platforms.

His rise to fame was marked by a victory over 58-year-old Mike Tyson, which he won by unanimous decision at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium in Arlington, Texas.

This eight-round contest generated gate revenues of $18.1 million, setting a record for boxing or mixed martial arts events held outside of Las Vegas. Additionally, it achieved a peak of 65 million concurrent streams on Netflix, establishing a new record for live sporting events on the platform.

Alvarez, with a record of 62 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws, currently holds the title of unified world super middleweight champion and has previously secured world championships in the light heavyweight, middleweight, and light middleweight divisions. The Guadalajara, Mexico native most recently triumphed over Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision.

As reported by ESPN, Alvarez had been in negotiations to face Terence Crawford, who boasts an undefeated record of 41-0, in September in Las Vegas. It remains uncertain whether the potential bout with Paul in May will impact those arrangements.
