Jakub Mensik stuns Novak Djokovic to win first ATP title at Miami Open

Czech teenager Jakub Mensik pulled off a historic upset at the Miami Open on Sunday, defeating his childhood idol Novak Djokovic 7-6(4) 7-6(4) to claim his maiden ATP title. The 19-year-old, ranked 54th in the world, denied Djokovic his bid for a landmark 100th career title, marking one of the biggest shocks in recent tennis history.
Playing in just his second ATP final, Mensik delivered a fearless performance, using his powerful serve to his advantage and firing 14 aces against the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Overcome with emotion, he collapsed onto the court after sealing victory with an unreturnable serve.
Djokovic, at 37, had aimed to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only players in the Open Era with at least 100 ATP titles. However, he struggled physically towards the end of the match.
"When I was young I started to play tennis because of you," Mensik told Djokovic during the trophy ceremony. "There is no harder task for a tennis player than to beat you in the finals of a tournament."
The match began under unusual circumstances, as Djokovic took the court following several hours of rain delays with visible swelling near his right eye. A shaky start saw him gift Mensik an early break with an unforced error in the second game. He later slipped in the fifth game, taking his time to recover while fans in Hard Rock Stadium cheered him on.
Despite regaining his rhythm to level the set, Djokovic lost his composure as Mensik surged to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak. With Andy Murray watching from his box, the Serbian veteran struggled to find answers while Mensik confidently closed out the first set.
The second set was an intense battle, with Mensik using his speed to counter Djokovic’s signature drop shots. The former world number one showed his resilience, saving two break points in the fifth game, but ultimately began to tire. In the deciding tiebreak, he collapsed from exhaustion after a grueling 21-shot rally.
"It hurts me to admit it but you were better," Djokovic admitted after the match. "In the clutch moments, you delivered the goods."
Mensik’s victory completed a dream run in Miami, where he also defeated third seed Taylor Fritz on his way to the final. His triumph was even more remarkable given that he nearly withdrew from the tournament due to knee pain just before his opening match.
"I came for treatment, needed a miracle," Mensik revealed. "And because of him I stepped on the court and because of him I'm standing here."
