Jannik Sinner advances to Australian Open fourth round with straight-sets win

Defending champion Jannik Sinner powered past unseeded American Marcos Giron with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory on Saturday, booking his place in the fourth round of the Australian Open. While not at his peak, Sinner’s firepower proved too much for Giron under the lights of Rod Laver Arena.

The Italian entered the match with a perfect 13-0 Grand Slam record against American opponents, and his dominance continued as Giron’s chances dwindled as the match progressed.

"Every match has its own difficulties," Sinner said after the win. "I struggled to return the first serve. I have room to improve, but every win is great in these conditions. I'm happy to be in the next round."

Clinical Yet Imperfect Performance

Despite a high tally of 37 unforced errors, Sinner balanced it with 35 winners in a match that lasted just over two hours. The top seed saved a late break point to claim the opening set in 34 minutes, sealing it with an ace.

While his forehand showed some inconsistencies in the second set, Sinner stayed composed, finishing it off with a signature rasping winner.

Giron, ranked 46th in the world, fought back with an early break in the third set. However, a foot injury hampered his mobility, allowing Sinner to regain control and close out the match with ease.

Looking Ahead

Sinner, who dominated on hard courts last year with Grand Slam wins in Melbourne and New York, is aiming to extend his streak. He now faces either Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic or Denmark’s 13th seed Holger Rune in the fourth round as he eyes another deep run in the tournament.

With his sights set on retaining the title, Sinner’s performance, even when below his best, sends a strong message to his rivals in Melbourne.
