Jannik Sinner defeats Frances Tiafoe to win ATP Cincinnati Open

On Monday, Jannik Sinner, aged 23, secured his third ATP Masters title by defeating Frances Tiafoe, 26, with a score of 7-6(4), 6-2 at the Cincinnati Open.

The Italian, who is currently ranked as the world number one, showcased his skills in preparation for the upcoming US Open, demonstrating patience during a challenging first set before decisively taking control in the second.

Despite his performance declining after the first-set tiebreaker, Tiafoe made a notable impact, advancing into the top 20 of the rankings and saving three match points before Sinner achieved his 15th career title. This victory marks Sinner's fifth title of 2024, following his triumph at the Australian Open in Melbourne earlier this season.

"I am pleased with this win; it was a particularly challenging week," Sinner remarked. "The mental aspect was tough, but I endeavored to perform at my best. Both Frances and I were fatigued from our semi-final matches on Sunday, and there was considerable tension."

Sinner expressed satisfaction with his performance during critical moments, stating, "I managed the situations on the court effectively. There were numerous fluctuations, which is typical, but I executed well during the pivotal moments of the match."

As he prepares for the US Open, commencing on August 26, Sinner is regarded as a leading contender, holding a significant advantage of over 2,000 points ahead of world number two Novak Djokovic. "I feel confident, but it is crucial to recover adequately to be prepared for New York," he added.

"My primary objective during this US Open swing is to maintain my current position. I possess the desire to continue competing and hope to deliver an impressive performance in New York."

In his match against Tiafoe, Sinner recorded 29 winners, which included 13 aces, and successfully broke the American's serve twice out of eight opportunities.

"I'm really exhausted," Tiafoe remarked to Sinner at the net following the match.

"I'm not accustomed to competing in so many matches like you elite players. Well done."

The two athletes battled for nearly an hour during the first set, with the Italian delivering 10 aces before reaching a tiebreaker.

A single lapse in Tiafoe's defense allowed Sinner to seize two set point opportunities, with the first being converted by the top seed to secure an early advantage.

Tiafoe lost his serve at the beginning of the second set as his energy began to wane, while Sinner achieved a double break in a fifth game that extended over 10 minutes and featured seven deuces.

Despite holding a 4-1 lead, the Italian had to remain vigilant, as Tiafoe saved three match points to narrow the score to 5-2 before Sinner ultimately finished the match a game later.

Sinner is now the youngest champion at this event since Andy Murray in 2008.
