Jannik Sinner Wins Australian Open Title, Earns $2.2M Prize Money

Italian sensation Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable form by winning his second consecutive Australian Open title on Sunday, defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3. The 23-year-old claimed $2.2 million in prize money while Zverev, still seeking his maiden Grand Slam title, walked away with $1.2 million after his third loss in a major final.

Sinner’s Stellar Season

Sinner’s win in Melbourne adds to a dominant run that began with his first Grand Slam title at last year’s Australian Open. In 2024, he captured the U.S. Open title and an astonishing eight ATP tournament victories, propelling him to the world No. 1 ranking—the first Italian to achieve this milestone since the rankings began in 1973.

The year also saw Sinner amass $19.7 million in official tournament earnings and bonuses, bolstered by a $6 million payday at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia. This marks the second-highest single-season earnings in tennis history, trailing only Novak Djokovic’s record $21.1 million in 2015.

With an 80-6 match record since the start of 2024, Sinner’s on-court dominance has also elevated his brand value, with endorsements from global giants like Nike, Head, Gucci, Lavazza, and Rolex.

Doping Controversy

Sinner’s incredible season faced scrutiny in March when it was revealed he tested positive for low levels of a banned anabolic steroid, clostebol. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner in August, citing “no fault or negligence,” attributing the incident to his physiotherapist’s use of a spray containing the substance. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed the decision, with a final ruling expected in April.
