Japan to face Fiji in Pacific final after romping past Samoa

Japan has secured a place in the final of the Pacific Nations Cup, set to face defending champions Fiji, following a commanding 49-27 victory over Samoa in Tokyo on Sunday.
In the semi-final, Japan demonstrated their prowess by scoring four tries in the first half and three in the second, marking Eddie Jones's third consecutive win after a challenging beginning to his second tenure as head coach.
Jones aims to extend this winning streak in the upcoming final in Osaka against Fiji, who triumphed over the United States with a score of 22-3 in the first semi-final held on Saturday.
"It was a significant advancement for the team," remarked Jones, whose squad previously defeated Canada and the United States to secure the top position in their group.
"Samoa presents a considerably stronger challenge than the USA or Canada. I believed we initiated the match with excellent intent, especially while contending with a strong wind."
Jones emphasized the necessity for his team to enhance their defensive strategies around the ruck if they aspire to claim the trophy for the first time since 2019.
"While we are pleased to reach the final, our sole objective is to win it," stated the Australian coach.
"We will be facing a high-caliber team in Fiji, and we have a productive week of preparation ahead of us."
Dylan Riley set the tone for Japan with a try just six minutes into the match.
Riley, who previously showcased an impressive solo effort against the United States during the group stage, skillfully gathered a through kick and scored, with Seungsin Lee successfully converting.
A penalty try shortly thereafter extended Japan's advantage, resulting in Samoa winger Elisapeta Alofipo being sent to the sin-bin.
Despite these challenges, Samoa persevered and managed to score a try through Tuna Tuitama in the 13th minute.
However, Japan quickly reestablished their lead when Tomoki Osada crossed the line on the right wing.
Samoa narrowed the gap with two penalties, but Japan responded with a fourth try just before halftime, as Lee scored again.
Kanji Shimokawa added another try four minutes into the second half, before Melani Matavao scored for Samoa.
Additional attempts by Japan's Shinobu Fujiwara and Taichi Takahashi, along with Samoa's Lalomilo Lalomilo, completed the scoring.
