Jasprit Bumrah wins ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024

Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah has been crowned the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024, following an extraordinary performance in the red-ball format. The ICC announced the honor on Monday, highlighting Bumrah’s exceptional contributions to Test cricket over the past year.
The 31-year-old speedster ended 2024 as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, claiming 71 wickets in just 13 matches. This remarkable tally was 19 more than second-placed Gus Atkinson of England, who picked up 52 wickets in 11 games. Bumrah’s achievements are even more impressive considering he returned from a back injury in late 2023.
Despite India’s loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Bumrah was a standout performer. He claimed 32 wickets in the five-match series at an astonishing average of 13.06, earning him the Player of the Series award.
The ICC highlighted Bumrah’s unparalleled dominance:
"His average across the year was a ridiculous 14.92, and he ended 2024 with an annual strike rate of just 30.1. Across Test history, none of the 17 bowlers to have taken 70+ wickets in a calendar year did so at an average as low as Bumrah's," read the statement.
Bumrah edged out England stars Harry Brook and Joe Root, along with Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, to claim the coveted award. He becomes the first Indian to win the accolade since Virat Kohli in 2018.
Expressing his gratitude, Bumrah said:
"I am deeply honoured to receive the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year award. Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognised on this platform is truly special.
"This award is not just a reflection of my individual efforts but also of the unwavering support of my teammates, coaches, and fans who continue to believe and inspire me every day.
"Representing India is a privilege I deeply cherish, and knowing my efforts bring smiles to people around the world makes this journey even more special."
Bumrah’s historic feats with the ball, highlighted by his unmatched average of 14.92 and remarkable consistency, have cemented his place among the greatest Test bowlers in cricket history. His stellar 2024 serves as an inspiration for fans and players alike, reaffirming his status as one of the game’s finest pacers.
