Jelena Ostapenko stuns Sabalenka to win Stuttgart Open

Jelena Ostapenko stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets on Sunday to claim the 2025 Stuttgart Open title, capping off a remarkable week with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. The 27-year-old Latvian entered the match 0-3 in head-to-head meetings against Sabalenka but flipped the script in emphatic fashion. With aggressive shot-making and relentless pressure, Ostapenko never allowed the top seed to settle into a rhythm.
A Statement from the Start
Ostapenko made her intentions clear from the opening game, breaking Sabalenka’s serve right away and setting the tone for the match. Her power from the baseline and precise returns left Sabalenka scrambling, as unforced errors began to creep into the Belarusian’s game.
Despite Sabalenka’s reputation as one of the most dominant players on tour, Ostapenko was unshaken, keeping her foot on the gas and maintaining control of every major rally.

One-Way Traffic in the Second Set
After securing the first set 6-4, Ostapenko accelerated even further. She broke Sabalenka three more times in the second set, including in the opening game, and reeled off five straight games to seal the win in just over an hour.
Sabalenka, who has now lost all four of her Stuttgart finals appearances, looked out of sorts and visibly frustrated by the barrage of winners coming from Ostapenko’s racquet.
A Special Week for Ostapenko
The title is Ostapenko’s ninth career WTA singles title, and her first on clay since she won the French Open in 2017. En route to the trophy, she also defeated world number two Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, making this one of her most impressive tournament runs in recent years.
“I’m really happy today,” Ostapenko said during the trophy presentation. “It’s always a great challenge to play Aryna—she’s a great champion. But I felt confident and just played my game.”
Respect from a Rival
Despite the defeat, Sabalenka was gracious in her post-match comments:
“Congratulations, Jelena, on a great week. You were the better player today and that’s it,” she said. “It’s not happening for me in Stuttgart yet, but maybe next year.”
What This Win Means
Ostapenko’s victory not only earns her the prestigious Stuttgart crown but also signals a resurgence on her favorite surface—just weeks before the French Open, where she will now be considered a serious contender.
