Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro target all-American final at US Open

Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro are poised to potentially create an all-American final at the US Open on Thursday, having both navigated significant challenges to reach the semi-finals.

Pegula achieved a remarkable victory over world number one and reigning champion Iga Swiatek in a dominant quarter-final match, marking her first appearance in the last four of a Grand Slam.

Navarro, also making her debut in a major semi-final, triumphed over defending champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round.
After experiencing six quarter-final exits in Grand Slam tournaments, the 30-year-old Pegula has finally reached her first semi-final without dropping a single set throughout the tournament.

On Wednesday, she eliminated top seed and four-time French Open winner Swiatek, conceding only six games in the process.

This victory marked Pegula's fourth triumph on hard courts against the Polish player, and historically, she has gone on to win the title following her previous three victories.

"Finally, I can declare that I am a semi-finalist," Pegula expressed. "To achieve this during prime time against the world's number one is surreal, but I always believed I could do it."

Following her title win in Toronto and a runner-up finish in Cincinnati, Pegula has secured 14 victories out of her last 15 matches during the US hard-court season, including a three-set win over Muchova in Cincinnati.

Muchova is making her second consecutive appearance in the semi-finals in New York. She reached the French Open final in 2023, achieving a career-high ranking of eighth in the world, before facing a significant right wrist injury that necessitated surgery. She made her return to competition in June of this year.

"There were some challenging days, but I consistently aimed to regroup and concentrate on the first steps I could take towards recovery," she stated. "I had an excellent team of doctors and a supportive team by my side throughout this journey. We worked diligently and remained united."

Emma Navarro faces Aryna Sabalenka in a highly anticipated match. Navarro, who has previously exited in the first round of the US Open, has now advanced to her first Grand Slam semi-final at the age of 23, having notably defeated defending champion Coco Gauff in her journey.

As the daughter of a wealthy father, Navarro has often been questioned about her privileged upbringing, which included a private education. She stated, "While I had access to resources as a child, I want to emphasize that my success is a result of my hard work." She continued, "I dedicated countless hours to training, starting with two-a-day sessions and gym workouts from the age of eight or nine. It has required immense effort and commitment."

Navarro's performance in Grand Slam tournaments this year has shown significant improvement, with a third-round finish in Melbourne, reaching the last 16 at Roland Garros where she was defeated by Sabalenka, and a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon.

Sabalenka, originally from Minsk but now based in Florida, is competing in her fourth consecutive US Open semi-final and is favored to advance to the final once more, following her loss to Gauff last year. The two-time Australian Open champion has only been broken four times during this tournament, successfully winning 42 out of 46 service games.

In the quarterfinals, she delivered a commanding performance against Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, conceding only three games. Sabalenka remarked, "I intend to apply significant pressure on Navarro and aim to disrupt her game."

Despite her powerful arsenal, Navarro matched Sabalenka's fastest serve of the tournament at 189.9 km/h (118 mph) during the first round.
