Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul lead American charge into US Open second round

Tommy Paul (27) and Jessica Pegula (30) spearheaded the American effort into the second round of the US Open, concluding the day's events on New York's prominent courts on Tuesday. Meanwhile, defeats for Danielle Collins (30) and Shelby Rogers (31) resulted in their exit from Grand Slam competition.
Paul triumphed over Italian Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, as the 14th seed successfully defended against 11 of 13 break points in front of dedicated fans who remained until late at night at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Despite facing challenges leading up to the tournament with early eliminations in Cincinnati and Toronto, Paul appeared to have the match under control until he lost his serve in the eighth game of the third set.
He made a strong comeback in the fourth set, winning the first two games and breaking Sonego again in the fifth. His next opponent will be Australian Max Purcell.
"It turned out better than I anticipated. I came out and played some quite comfortable tennis," Paul remarked, expressing gratitude to the fans who stayed to support him well past 1 a.m.
"The fact that you all are here is incredible. I’m feeling tired myself."
In the final match of the night on Arthur Ashe Stadium, sixth seed Pegula defeated fellow American Rogers with a score of 6-4, 6-3. This match marked the conclusion of Rogers' Grand Slam singles career, although she plans to continue competing in doubles.
"I anticipated feeling a range of emotions, but the predominant one is gratitude," Rogers stated.
Collins, who will also participate in doubles, reflected on her remarkable final season and expressed contentment with her choice to step away from the sport.
The 11th seed exhibited a commanding performance in the first set against her unseeded fellow countrywoman Caroline Dolehide; however, her form deteriorated in the second set, ultimately resulting in a defeat with scores of 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Sofia Kenin, the champion of the 2020 Australian Open, triumphed over Britain's former titleholder Emma Raducanu with a scoreline of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 on the Grandstand, and she is set to face Pegula in her next match.
Sebastian Korda advanced effortlessly past France's Corentin Moutet, winning with a score of 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-0, and will compete against Czech player Tomas Machac in the upcoming round.
