Jessica Pegula defeats Maria Sakkari; completes clean sweep of Bacalar Group

Jessica Pegula continued her strong form in Mexico on Thursday night, defeating Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-2 at the WTA Finals in Cancun.

After defeating Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina earlier in the tournament, Pegula finishes top of the Bacalar Group with three wins and no losses.

With Pegula securing a spot in the WTA Finals semi-finals on Saturday, she'll be buoyed by one incredible statistic this season: the world No. 5 is 50-0 after winning the first set.

Pegula's fast start once again blew away an opponent at the WTA Finals, with the American racing out to a lead against Maria Sakkari.

Both women struggled on serve throughout the match, with 10 breaks in 17 games, but Sakkari failed to hold hers on seven occasions, leading to her defeat.

Pegula raced out to a 5-3 lead after a break in the third game, before taking advantage of Sakkari's poor second serve to seal the set.

The second set was much the same, with Pegula pouncing on the Greek's second serve and continuing to hit her spots in the baseline exchanges.

Pegula completes a remarkable turnaround from this time last year, when she went 0-3 in group play at the WTA Finals. She is now 3-0 in the tournament and will face either Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur in the semi-finals.
