Jessica Pegula stages sensational fightback against Muchova to earn place in US Open final

The enthusiastic cheers of the home crowd resonated throughout Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday as Jessica Pegula (30) executed a remarkable comeback to defeat Karolina Muchova (28) with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, thereby securing a place in her first Grand Slam final against Aryna Sabalenka (26).

The possibility of an all-American final was dashed earlier when Belarusian Sabalenka triumphed over Emma Navarro with a score of 6-3, 7-6(2). For a period during the subsequent match, it appeared that the host nation might not have representation in the championship match.

In her inaugural major semi-final, Pegula initially struggled against Muchova, who dominated the first set. However, she managed to reverse the situation against the unseeded Czech player.

Pegula could only produce three winners in the opening set, while Muchova displayed no signs of rustiness despite her recent recovery from a wrist injury that had kept her sidelined for approximately ten months.

As the famously boisterous main showcourt fell silent, Muchova seemed poised to continue her dominance after taking a 2-0 lead in the second set.

Nevertheless, Pegula gradually rediscovered the form that had allowed her to win 14 of her last 15 matches, breaking her opponent in both the fourth and sixth games.

"It comes down to really small moments that flip momentum," Pegula remarked.

"She made me feel like a novice... I was on the verge of tears because it was quite humiliating.

"I began to play in the manner I had intended... It took some time, but I honestly do not know how I managed to turn that around."

Muchova managed to break back in the seventh game, but her errors began to accumulate, and she displayed signs of nerves by double-faulting on set point, granting Pegula an opportunity she seized without hesitation.

Encouraged by the crowd, Pegula surged through the first three games of a nearly flawless final set and celebrated by raising her hands in triumph after breaking Muchova on her second match point with an impressive forehand return.
