Jim Larrañaga steps down as University of Miami basketball head coach

On Thursday, Miami basketball head coach Jim Larranaga, aged 75, announced his resignation for personal reasons, highlighting the current state of college athletics.
This unexpected resignation follows a challenging start to the season for Miami, which stands at 4-8 after concluding the previous year with a ten-game losing streak. Larranaga, the most successful coach in the program's history, was under contract until 2027.
"After more than fifty years in college coaching, it is simply time," Larranaga stated. "There is never an ideal moment to step away, but I owe it to our student-athletes, our staff, and the University of Miami to make this decision now, as my heart is no longer in the game. I also owe it to Liz, Jay, Jon, and my grandchildren to be more present in their lives."
"The university requires a new leader for the program, someone who is both skilled and adaptable to the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. It has been a tremendous honor to be part of the Hurricane family and to represent this esteemed institution.
Most importantly, I have been incredibly fortunate to coach the many young men who chose to wear the UM jersey and who have gone on to succeed in their respective paths. I will always be a Cane."
Bill Courtney will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Larranaga's coaching record stands at 716-483, encompassing his tenures at Miami, George Mason, and Bowling Green, making him the only coach in college basketball history to achieve at least 100 victories with three different Division I programs.
He led George Mason to the Final Four in 2006 and took Miami to the same stage in 2023, where his Hurricanes were defeated by a UCONN team that ultimately claimed the National Championship.
"It is difficult to fully express the impact Jim Larranaga has had on the University of Miami," remarked university president Joe Echevarria. "His contributions extend far beyond the wins."
He departs from the program having secured two ACC championships and a Coach of the Year award in 2013.
Miami's season is set to progress with a matchup against Boston College (7-5) on New Year's Day.
