Joe Root Aims to Break England's Run Record in First Test Against Pakistan

Root is just 71 runs shy of eclipsing Cook's impressive total of 12,472 runs, and if he maintains his current scoring form, he could achieve this milestone when the match kicks off on Monday in Multan.
"I aim to exceed that total in this game," Root stated about Cook's record. "I believe I will be playing well beyond that milestone, so it's not a primary concern for me."
Having played 146 Tests, Root already holds the record for the most centuries by an English player, with 34 to his name, half of which he has scored since 2020. He is also eyeing the international record of 15,921 runs, held by India's legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Reflecting on their last encounter in 2022, Root noted that England achieved a historic clean sweep against Pakistan, winning the series 3-0 and marking Pakistan's first-ever home whitewash. "Our previous tour here was certainly successful," he remarked. "It's always beneficial to carry that confidence and positive memories into any series."
As the team prepares for the Test, they will have to contend with soaring temperatures expected to reach up to 39 degrees Celsius. "We are preparing for the heat and the warm conditions expected over the five days," Root emphasized. "Our focus is on acclimatizing to the conditions as best as we can."

Pakistan's vice-captain, Saud Shakeel, also shared concerns about how the high temperatures could affect the pitch's grass cover. "We will consider all factors given the heat," he stated.
Despite the challenging conditions, Shakeel vowed to counter England's aggressive playing style. "England consistently plays attacking cricket, and the more they adopt that approach, the more opportunities arise to capitalize on their mistakes," he asserted. "We will strive to induce as many errors from them as possible."
