Joel Embiid Commits to Team USA at 2024 Olympics

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the current NBA MVP, has confirmed his commitment to play for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Embiid conveyed his decision to Team USA's executive director, Grant Hill, on Thursday morning after the two held a discreet meeting lasting nearly an hour in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the Sixers are conducting their training camp.

Embiid, who was born in Cameroon and possesses dual French and American citizenship, had been the subject of an intense recruiting battle between three countries, each vying for his representation at the Olympics. During a media day press conference on Monday, Embiid disclosed his genuine struggle in making a choice among the three options.

Ultimately, sources reveal that Embiid opted to represent the United States due to his desire to aid the U.S. national team in reclaiming its supremacy in international basketball. This decision comes after Team USA failed to secure a medal at the FIBA World Cup in Manila earlier this summer.

Several superstar players, including former league MVPs Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, have expressed their interest in uniting forces to bolster Team USA's performance next summer. The team's failure to medal in consecutive World Cups had not occurred since 1970.

As the reigning NBA MVP, Embiid found inspiration in the eagerness of past MVPs and fellow superstars who were keen to compete for the U.S. in the Summer Games. He is also excited about the prospect of winning a gold medal, especially since his 3-year-old son, Arthur, was born as an American citizen in 2020.

The addition of the 7-foot-tall Embiid addresses some of the major deficiencies that plagued the American squad at this year's World Cup, particularly in terms of size and defense. In the losses that led to the team's disappointing performance in Manila, they allowed an average of 117 points per game.

Embiid, a six-time NBA All-Star and three-time All-Defensive team selection, is poised to make a significant impact on Team USA's quest for Olympic gold.

While France, the current Olympic silver medalist, had sought to convince Embiid to represent their team as they host the 2024 Games, Embiid's decision now firmly aligns him with the United States. Notably, France finished 18th at this year's World Cup, but they have secured an automatic berth for the Olympics as the host nation. In contrast, Cameroon is yet to qualify for the Games.

Embiid's choice to represent Team USA underscores his commitment to helping his country regain its standing as a dominant force in international basketball, following their recent setbacks on the global stage.
