John Obi Mikel Blasts Jamie Carragher Over AFCON Comments

Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has hit out at Jamie Carragher for his controversial remarks about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), branding the former Liverpool defender as "ignorant and disrespectful."

Carragher sparked backlash after suggesting that Mohamed Salah is at a disadvantage in the Ballon d'Or race because he cannot win a "major tournament" like the Euros, Copa America, or the World Cup—a statement that appeared to downplay the significance of AFCON.

Mikel, speaking on The Obi One Podcast, did not hold back in his criticism:

"It's so disrespectful what he said, and this is coming from someone who never won any major international competition with England. His statement was absolutely wrong. I hope he will come out and make a massive apology because he owes people around the world an apology. It was ignorant to disrespect such a wonderful tournament."

Mikel Slams Carragher’s "Arrogance"

The 2013 AFCON winner took issue with Carragher’s dismissive attitude, particularly his reaction when Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge challenged him live on air.

"The smirk on his face, the arrogant f***ing smirk on his face to dismiss... That smirk on his face is absolutely what tipped me off. You have people trying to correct you, and you're coming out and attacking absolutely everyone else and discrediting this wonderful tournament."

Mikel also highlighted Carragher's lack of silverware with England and his failure to win the Premier League during his career, questioning his authority to analyze successful teams.

"You never won it, you don't know what it takes to win the f***ing Premier League, you don't know what it takes to win with your national team. You can't discredit such a wonderful, wonderful tournament. People in Africa die for the Africa Cup of Nations."

The AFCON Debate: Ballon d’Or and Global Recognition

AFCON has long been criticized for not receiving the same prestige as its European and South American counterparts. However, the tournament remains one of the most fiercely contested international competitions, with legends like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Touré, and Sadio Mané all cementing their legacies on the African stage.

While Carragher's comments found support from former players like Joey Barton, many—including Rio Ferdinand, Richards, and Sturridge—have condemned his remarks.

Richards quickly corrected him during the live debate:

"Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying 'they aren't taking it seriously.' AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know."

Despite the backlash, Carragher has defended his stance, responding to Ferdinand’s critique on Instagram:

"I didn’t say that, you clown. Stop playing to the gallery like you always do."

African Influence in Global Football

Mikel also pointed out the massive contribution of African players to European leagues, particularly the Premier League, which has been home to African superstars like Salah, Drogba, Mané, Yaya Touré, Riyad Mahrez, and Jay-Jay Okocha.

"Africans watch you on the weekend and you sit there, open your mouth, and discredit the whole fing African continent, saying your African Nations tournament is s. That it has no value because it's not the Euros or Copa America. He can f*** off. We know in Africa what we bring to the Premier League."

The Ballon d'Or has only been won by one African player—George Weah in 1995—but stars like Mané (2022 runner-up) and Salah have consistently been in the conversation.

As the debate rages on, one thing remains clear: AFCON deserves respect, and players who shine on the African stage should not be overlooked in global football discussions.
