Jokic leads Nuggets to a 132-120 victory over Spurs

Nikola Jokic showcased an extraordinary performance, achieving a season-high of 39 points coupled with 11 rebounds and nine assists. This stellar display led the Nuggets to a 132-120 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night. The win marked the Spurs' 12th consecutive loss and coincided with the Denver debut of Victor Wembanyama.
Despite Wembanyama's impressive debut, securing 22 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and four blocks in just 24 minutes—statistics that made him the first rookie to achieve such a remarkable feat—he couldn't halt San Antonio's ongoing slide.
Speaking about his historic performance, Wembanyama expressed his enthusiasm for bringing innovation to the game. "I like bringing something new to the game," he said. "I’m glad I can already put my name in history a little bit. It’s a good feeling."
Although Wembanyama's standout performance made waves, it wasn't enough to break San Antonio's losing streak, which now stands as the third longest in the franchise's history. The Spurs had previously faced 13 consecutive losses during the 1988-89 season and 16 consecutive losses in the last season.
The Nuggets, buoyed by Michael Porter Jr.'s 25 points and Reggie Jackson's 20, improved their home record to an impressive 8-0. However, their recent road trip had been less successful, with four losses out of five games, including a defeat to Houston that eliminated them from the NBA In-Season Tournament.
Porter reflected on the team's inconsistent performance between home and away games, admitting frustration: "All of us are kind of frustrated trying to figure out why we play so differently and at such a different pace. We’re running more at home. I don’t know what it is, so I think we got to figure it out."
Acknowledging Wembanyama's impact, Nuggets coach Michael Malone praised the rookie's aggressive and versatile play style, even amidst the team's losses. "He’s playing aggressively. He’s affecting the game in a lot of different ways," said Gregg Popovich of the Spurs. "He’s very unselfish. He doesn’t worry about making a mistake."
Aaron Gordon's absence due to a right heel strain influenced the Nuggets' lineup, with Justin Holiday stepping in for his first start of the season. Additionally, coach Malone shuffled the rotation, giving DeAndre Jordan an opportunity as Jokic’s backup, where he contributed six points and five rebounds in just six minutes during the first half.
The Nuggets established an early lead, maintaining a four-point advantage after the first quarter and extending it to a 68-48 lead late in the second. Although San Antonio staged a rally to reduce the deficit to 12 by halftime, Denver dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Spurs 33-17, resulting in a commanding 23-point lead heading into the final period.
During the game, Wembanyama narrowly missed an impressive dunk in the second half, demonstrating his athletic prowess, but was fouled before completing the play. Coach Malone commented on Wembanyama's potential to make an impact with his dunking ability, acknowledging his exceptional talent and predicting further growth.
Looking ahead, San Antonio is scheduled to host Atlanta, while Denver will face the Los Angeles Clippers in their upcoming games.
