Joshua poised to extend redemption journey against boxing newcomer Ngannou

Anthony Joshua will face off against Francis Ngannou, a newcomer to the boxing world, in Saudi Arabia this evening as he perseveres in his quest to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of the sport.
Riyadh is set to host the event known as 'Knockout Chaos', featuring an exciting fight card headlined by a highly anticipated match-up. Joshua's upcoming bout with Ngannou may seem like a fallback option, considering his initial plans to face Deontay Wilder were disrupted when Wilder suffered a surprising defeat to Joseph Parker in December.
Nevertheless, this fight presents a significant opportunity for both fighters, who find themselves at different stages in their boxing careers. The winner of this match is likely to secure a potential meeting with the victor of the Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk bout scheduled for May.
Joshua's journey to redemption continues after his unexpected loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 and subsequent defeats to Usyk, the most recent of which occurred in August 2022. He has been diligently working to reclaim his position at the top of the heavyweight division.
Teaming up with coaches Derrick James and Ben Davison, the latter being Fury's former trainer, has sparked a resurgence in Joshua's career. Promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his belief in Joshua's abilities, stating, "It's been a blessing. I've never seen him punching with such ferocity, I've never seen him with such confidence, and I believe he's the best heavyweight in the world - I do." This upcoming fight marks Joshua's fourth bout in just 11 months, emphasizing the importance of staying active for top-tier fighters.
Under James, Joshua halted the decline with a unanimous decision victory over Jermaine Franklin Jr in April 2023, before delivering an even more impressive performance against Robert Helenius in August.
In the seventh round, a devastating right-hand punch knocked out the Finnish boxer, showcasing glimpses of the Joshua we had seen in the past.
Prior to his December fight with Otto Wallin, Joshua teamed up with Davison, resulting in another strong showing. He dominated the match before Wallin's corner decided to withdraw him after five rounds.
However, Joshua's upcoming bout against MMA icon Ngannou presents a unique challenge that must be taken into account.
Ngannou, who had never competed in a professional boxing match before October 28th, made his debut against WBC heavyweight champion Fury. Many did not expect the former UFC champion to hold his own against Fury, but he surprised everyone with his performance and never appeared out of place.
Despite losing by a close split decision, Ngannou managed to knock Fury down in the third round and posed several threats throughout the fight. The result sparked debates among observers, with some arguing that it should have favored Ngannou. Regardless, it undeniably brought Ngannou into the spotlight of the boxing world.
While Ngannou is expected to be the clear underdog against Joshua, it does not guarantee an easy victory for the British boxer, as Fury discovered.
"I believe I haven't yet shocked the world," Ngannou stated during a press conference. "I am still in the process of training and learning. Once I truly grasp it, that's when I believe the world will truly be astonished.
"I have faith in the process and the hard work we are putting in, so it will pay off.
"On Friday night, I will leave everything in that ring to secure the victory," Ngannou concluded.
Ngannou's second boxing match could pose a challenge for Joshua, despite his experience. Ngannou's punching power surprised Fury, making it a key asset for him in Riyadh. Joshua, on the other hand, could use his own strategies to gain control of the fight.
A more strategic approach could tire Ngannou, giving Joshua an opportunity to strike. However, Ngannou is likely to have some surprises of his own. Joshua is also a powerful opponent, with 24 knockout wins out of 27 fights. This sets the stage for an exciting battle that is sure to deliver.
