Joshua poised to extend redemption journey against boxing newcomer Ngannou

Anthony Joshua will face off against Francis Ngannou, a newcomer to the boxing world, in Saudi Arabia this evening as he perseveres in his quest to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of the sport.

Riyadh is set to host the event known as 'Knockout Chaos', featuring an exciting fight card headlined by a highly anticipated match-up. Joshua's upcoming bout with Ngannou may seem like a fallback option, considering his initial plans to face Deontay Wilder were disrupted when Wilder suffered a surprising defeat to Joseph Parker in December.

Nevertheless, this fight presents a significant opportunity for both fighters, who find themselves at different stages in their boxing careers. The winner of this match is likely to secure a potential meeting with the victor of the Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk bout scheduled for May.

Joshua's journey to redemption continues after his unexpected loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 and subsequent defeats to Usyk, the most recent of which occurred in August 2022. He has been diligently working to reclaim his position at the top of the heavyweight division.

Teaming up with coaches Derrick James and Ben Davison, the latter being Fury's former trainer, has sparked a resurgence in Joshua's career. Promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his belief in Joshua's abilities, stating, "It's been a blessing. I've never seen him punching with such ferocity, I've never seen him with such confidence, and I believe he's the best heavyweight in the world - I do." Under James, Joshua halted the decline with a unanimous decision victory over Jermaine Franklin Jr in April 2023, before delivering an even more impressive performance against Robert Helenius in August.
