Juan Soto, Mets reportedly agree to historic 15-year $765 million deal

Juan Soto, is set to join the New York Mets after finalizing an unprecedented 15-year contract valued at $765 million, marking the largest agreement in the history of professional sports.

This contract, which averages $51 million annually, does not feature any deferrals and includes an opt-out option after the 2029 season. Nevertheless, the Mets retain the ability to nullify this opt-out if they increase his annual average from $51 million to $55 million during the last decade of the agreement.

Soto's contract surpasses the previous record held by Shohei Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite the Yankees' efforts to persuade Soto to remain in the Bronx, he has opted for the Mets.

Soto concluded a remarkable season with the Yankees, achieving personal bests in home runs (41) and runs scored (128). The four-time All-Star secured third place in the American League MVP voting and earned a Silver Slugger award.

With a career on-base percentage of .421, Soto boasts the highest figure in Major League Baseball since his debut in 2018. He recorded a slash line of .288/.419/.569/.989, representing his most productive offensive year since 2021, when he finished second in the National League MVP voting.

Additionally, Soto ranked second in the entire MLB for walks (129), trailing only his former teammate Aaron Judge. His 41 home runs placed him fourth in the league, while his 109 RBIs ranked sixth. His 128 runs scored were second only to Ohtani's 134.

The New York Mets are actively enhancing their roster through free agency, with Soto joining an impressive lineup of prominent players. He will reunite with his Yankees teammate Clay Holmes, who recently signed a three-year, $38 million contract with the Mets.

Furthermore, the Mets are also managing Francisco Lindor's 10-year, $341 million contract, as they aim to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the highest payroll in Major League Baseball.
