Julian Alvarez relishes new challenge at Atletico after leaving Manchester City

Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, aged 24, sought a transformation in his career following a brief yet successful tenure at Premier League club Manchester City. On Friday, he expressed his enthusiasm for embarking on a new challenge with Atletico Madrid.
Alvarez signed a six-year contract with Atletico on Monday. Although the financial specifics of the transfer were not disclosed by either club, British media reported that the deal was valued at approximately 75 million euros ($82.46 million), with an additional 20 million euros in potential performance-related bonuses.
His departure set a new record for Manchester City, surpassing the 50 million pounds ($64.50 million) that Chelsea paid for England winger Raheem Sterling in 2022.
During his two-year tenure at City, Alvarez secured two Premier League titles, having joined from Argentine club River Plate in 2022. He also won the Champions League, Club World Cup, Super Cup, and FA Cup once each. Additionally, he is a World Cup champion and a two-time Copa America winner with the Argentine national team.
"I felt the need for a change in my career, seeking a new challenge, and I believe this club provides the environment for me to reach my full potential as a footballer," Alvarez stated during his presentation as a new player for Atletico.
Having scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for City, Alvarez expressed his readiness to contribute fully to Diego Simeone's squad.
"I aspire to play; I am always ready to take on any role, and as long as I am on the field to assist the team, I will be content," he remarked.
"Winning is always a dream; the desire to win and compete is inherent. I do not consider myself a superhero for winning the World Cup... I am here to contribute and strive for success in all competitions.
"My goals are to achieve my best self and to develop as an individual while helping the team to win."
Atletico Madrid, who concluded last season in fourth place in LaLiga, will commence their campaign with an away match against Villarreal on Monday.
